Police arrest 12 in England anti-terror raids

LONDON: British police arrested 12 men Wednesday in a series of anti-terrorist raids involving hundreds of officers across northwest England.

Sources said as many as 10 among arrested men were Pakistani nationals English citizens.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspects were detained under the Terrorism Act at eight addresses in the cities of Manchester and Liverpool and the surrounding area, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of London.

Police would not give any details of the alleged plot. The foreign news agency reported that most of those arrested were Pakistani nationals.

Police said the suspects ranged in age from a youth in his mid-teens to a 41-year-old man.

"Although the operation is ongoing, this phase is still in its very early stages, so the information we can release about it is limited," said Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter, head of the Northwest Counterterrorism Unit.

Police would not confirm reports in British the media that the arrests were triggered after a senior officer inadvertently leaked details of a secret anti-terrorism operation.

Gordon Brown says Pakistan must do more on terrorism

LONDON: Pakistan must do more to tackle terrorism, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Thursday, a day after police arrested a number of Pakistani men in what Brown called a major plot.

"We are dealing with a very big terrorist plot -- we've been following it for some time," Brown told Sky News.

"We know that there are links between terrorists in Britain and terrorists in Pakistan ... Pakistan has got to do more to root out the terrorist elements in its country."

Police arrested 12 men on Wednesday in raids across northwest England as part of an investigation into suspected al Qaeda attack planning within Britain.

Security forces had targeted 10 Pakistani nationals and one Briton in the operation, according to a leaked document.

Brown said he would speak to Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari about ways to improve co-operation on tackling extremism. Most plots in Britain since September 11, 2001 have had links to Pakistan, including suicide bombings in July 2005 which killed 52 people on the underground and bus network.

I personally think our prime minister Gordon Brown needs to be more cautious before pointing more accusations towards Pakistan its like as if he is already accusing the suspects guilty before proving thier innocence.

I have got a bad feeling all this is done to give Pakistanis a bad name and pile more pressure to build a case for invasion of Pakistan.

America is gunning for a final kill that is to invade Pakistan and then thwart China which is the only way to regain its lost glory because at the moment USA is sinking down the pan.
