POF produced G-3 rifles also in use by European armed forces -Wah Industries-Inflex joint venture to produce CNG cylinders

Chairman Pakistan Ord nance Factories (POF Lt General Syed Sabahat Hussain says that POF has been playing very effective role in meeting defence needs of the country in several fields. Its products are of international standards and in high demand abroad. For example G-3 rifle, a POF product is not only in use by our own armed forces but armed forces of several countries also use it.
Lt General Sabahat Hussain in an exclusive interview with Pakistan Observer said the POF has developed Vision 2020 to conceive futuristic projects. The vision includes a system integrator and a hub of Research and Development. The vision will also include fully developed Human Resource Management System. As a first step in that direction, POF has started joint venture with Poongsan Company of South Korea. Agreements have been signed with Nexter of France, Pretis of Bosnia and Argentoil of Argentina for co-production in POF. The POF has also cooperative arrangements with world class companies of other advanced countries including Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and South Africa for joint productions.
He said, POF is by far Pakistans largest defence industrial complex and indeed the nations largest manufacturing concern. It currently has directly controlled production units and subsidiaries employing workforce of about 26,000 including highly qualified engineers and craftsmen.
The POF Chairman said the organisation has been engaged in producing an extensive range of conventional weapons and ammunition for defence applications as well as a variety of commercial products for the last sixty years. POF products range includes small arms, Machine Guns and variety of other weapons and ammunition. He said, in addition, POF produces a large variety of commercial explosives, dynamites and detonators including industrial chemicals in its subsidiary Wah Nobel. POF effectively utilises its surplus capacity for exports and civil production. The exports are done with the approval of the government in accordance with UN Charter obligations. There are about 40 countries on POF export list.
He said, POF has achieved four certifications in various disciplines and it speaks volumes about the quality bench marks POF upholds. Having the accreditation in all the four standards is unique distinction for POF.
POF Chairman said, relentless pursuit of excellence by the organisation through ensuring high quality precision manufacturing and on-time delivery have boosted international demand for the companys products. Quality and cost effectiveness are the two key elements of the POFs international marketing strategy. He explained that availability of genuine raw materials, cheap labour and rich experience are great strengths available to POF. In a market where quality is paramount, POF offers a three fold quality control mechanism which includes qualification at the factory level, verification by the quality assurance department and finally independent inspections by inspectors appointed by the buyers. POF is highly competitive on prices.
He said, POFs inherent flexibility towards accommodating any form of entrepreneurial joint venture on sound commercial and professional lines results in ample opportunities for collaboration in both militaries and commercial sectors. A recent achievement is a successful joint venture product between POF and South Korean Company that has been completed in a record time of less than one year.
Lt General Sabahat said POF while remaining in the public sector, has emerged as a corporate company which is fully alive to the global trends. Efforts are currently being focused on technology inflow, capacity building and upgrading of plants and machinery. The ultimate aim is to bridge the technology gap enabling POF to produce state-of-the-art arms and ammunitions.
He said, Wah Industries, a subsidiary of POF recently entered joint venture with World renowned Argentinean Company Inflex to produce high quality CNG cylinders to meet Pakistans market needs.
He said, all civic amenities are available in Wah township. 98 percent literacy rate exists here. Quality educational facilities are available to all segments of society. The township has University, Medical College, Engineering College and IT College. Wah has emerged as a city of education and sports. Its sports complex and nine-hole Golf Course are mile-stones in pursuit of physical fitness and recreation. There are five jogging tracks in Cantonment.
Lt General Sabahat said the POF provide quality medical facilities to its employees, free of charge. The employees are provided with medicines also free of charge. 500-bed POF hospital and twenty dispensaries provide round-the-clock medical cover to the employees. POF hospital serves as teaching hospital for the POF Medical College. The hospital has all specialities and is staffed by experienced specialists. The hospital not only caters for the local needs of Wah cantonment but also serves the surrounding areas. He said the POF Hospital has embarked on a development programme to provide most modern medical facilities to the patients.
To a question about the standards at the POF Medical College, the Chairman POF touched on salient features of the institution. He said, within a short period, the POF Medical College has earned repute for its highly qualified and committed faculty, teaching facilities, equipment and discipline. Its teaching POF Hospital with a large number of beds and fully functioning departments is serving the college quite well. The POF Hospital houses a modern Nursing School which is currently being expanded and upgraded.
He said, the POF Medical College and Hospital have earned good name in the civic circles. We are determined to keep our prestige through maintaining high standard of teaching at the POF Medical College as well as its teaching hospital. A new campus for the Medical College is nearing completion.
Commandant, POF Hospital Brig. Arshad Zia told Pakistan Observer that treatment facilities at the hospital are being upgraded as part of an ambitious development programme that will cost 30 million rupees.
He said currently the CCU and Emergency department are being expanded and modernise to the state-of-the-art level. The CCU would soon be provided with most modern equipment and be staffed by eminent specialists. The upgraded CCU would provide for surgery relating treatment including heart surgery. The Emergency department will include a modern Trauma Centre.
The Commandant said a modern Dental Centre has been set-up at the hospital which has been provided with most modern equipment and is staffed by senior dental surgeons. The Nursing School at the hospital is also being upgraded. Close circuit television system has been installed in the operation theatres for the benefit of POF medical college students.
