LAHORE: Notwithstanding the PPP governments denial that it had any plan to act against the superior judiciary, the PML-N has warned of its sharp reaction taking the alleged plan as a direct assault on the Constitution and democracy.
The PML-N is fully aware of its responsibilities towards supremacy of the Constitution and sanctity of the judiciary and will spare no efforts in this regard, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a statement on Friday.
Any conspiracy against the judiciary will be tantamount to a direct attack on the Constitution and democracy, the statement added.
Some channels had run the news the previous day that the government was planning to withdraw the notification whereby superior courts judges removed by former president Pervez Musharraf in the infamous Nov 3, 2007 Emergency Plus order were restored to their Nov 2, 2007 positions.
The government came up with the clarification only on Friday evening when federal ministers Babar Awan and Qamaruz Zaman Kaira held a joint press conference, ruling out any such action against any organ of the state.
Mr Sharif stressed that an independent and free judiciary was of fundamental importance for the democratic system. He warned that those elements who were planning an assault on the judiciary would fail in their efforts and their fate would be even worse than that of General Musharraf.
The people of Pakistan have rendered innumerable sacrifices for the revival of the judiciary and democracy and they also know how to defend it, he added.
PML-N chief spokesperson Ahsan Iqbal told Dawn that the attorney-generals refusal to give a clear-cut statement before the Supreme Court that the news report held no grounds suggested that the reports regarding withdrawal of the March 16, 2009 notification were credible. To a question, he said the apex court pre-empted the move by acting in time. Had the judiciary delayed the action, it would have become controversial in case the government had de-notified the restoration of judges, he added.
To another query, he asserted that some responsible persons in the government leaked the reports that the government is going to commit suicide and that saved the country from another restore the judiciary movement.
Meanwhile, a private TV channel reported Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah as saying that the PML-N would not hesitate in laying a siege to the Presidency if the PPP government acted against the free judiciary.
