Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif has now assumed the role of ‘acting’ president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The announcement was made in the meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of PML-N in Lahore. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi arrived at the CWC via helicopter.

Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz were also present during the meeting.

Earlier today, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting said, “The Central Executive Committee and Central Working Committee of PML-N will meet on Tuesday to hold discussions on the election of the party president.”

“Targeting a single party is undermining the parliamentary process,” she added.

However, sources close to the PML-N had disclosed to The Express Tribune earlier that Shehbaz would take on the position.

ECP moved to denotify PML-N

According to the sources, the party had called a Central Working Committee meeting in Lahore at PML-N Secretariat on Tuesday, where it will elect its new acting president and announce the date for the PML-N General Council meeting. The date will be set after the senate elections on March 3. Sources further revealed that during the council meeting, acting president Shehbaz will be elected as the new party president of PML-N.

Earlier in the week, during a meeting at Jati Umra, other important decisions regarding initiation of election activity were finalised. These would also be brought before the CWC meeting for approval. The decisions taken, according to Federal Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and former information minister Pervez Rashid, were regarding the formation of party parliamentary boards, election cells, legal cells, a media cell, and activating the election office at the PMLN Secretariat – 180-H.

For PML-N, Shehbaz is the obvious choice

On February 21, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from being the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan, issued a short order on petitions filed against Sharif’s holding of the party position after his disqualification in the Panama Papers case.

In its five-page order, read by Chief Justice Nisar, the court declares that any person who is disqualified under the Article 62 or 63 of the Constitution is barred from holding the position of “Party Head” by whatever name called.

The PML-N has elected Nawaz Sharif "as its Quaid (leader) for life", Maryam Nawaz tweeted on Tuesday as the PML-N Central Working Committee meeting (CWC) was underway at the Sharif family's Model Town residence in Lahore.

PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq proposed Nawaz's elevation as 'quaid for life', saying "Mian Nawaz Sharif was, is and Inshallah will remain the leader of the PML-N".

His proposal, followed by chants of "Wazir-e-Azam, Nawaz Sharif", was endorsed by Prime Minister Khaqan Abbasi, who said: "These are the peoples' decisions. The courts had no right to take this decision — this our party's decision."

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was elected unopposed as the acting president of PML-N after Nawaz proposed his name to loud applause.

The meeting, attended by the party's bigwigs, was held to decide who would serve as interim president of the party following a Supreme Court ruling ordering the removal of Nawaz Sharif as party chief. Party leaders, including NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana, Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair and Railways Minister Saad Rafique, were present at the meeting chaired by PML-N Chairman Haq.

The emergency measures kicked in after the Supreme Court (SC) struck off a controversial amendment to the Elections Act, 2017 which had last year paved the way for Nawaz Sharif to resume leadership of the party after being disqualified in the Panama Papers case in July last year.

According to the party’s rules, the PML-N’s CWC is supposed to elect an acting party head within a week of its chief’s removal. Then the party’s general council is required to elect a president within 45 days. Nawaz was removed from the post of PML-N president by the apex court on Feb 22.

Shahbaz Sharif was tipped as the favourite for the position from the start.

“There is no candidate for the slot of interim president of PML-N other than Shahbaz Sharif. However, the CWC will hold deliberations before electing the proposed member for the top party post,” PML-N Information Secretary Mushahidullah Khan had earlier told Dawn.

Interestingly, the SC ruling had rendered all decisions Nawaz Sharif had taken in the capacity of the party chief as null and void. This raises a question mark over the legal status of PML-N’s CWC, which has 109 members nominated by Nawaz while he was party president.

Keeping this technical issue in mind, the PML-N’s information secretary had said that only those CWC members who were elected before the July 28 decision had been called for Tuesday’s meeting.

Godfather as usual is playing double games, He can no longer serve PMLN in politics, his political career is finished, this chutya is so hungry for power, he thinks by winning next elections, he will come back in power by twisting and bending rules, This Godfather thinks he is above the law by using an excuse public courts, there is no such thing as public courts, he is completely disrespecting the superior judiciary, excuse my language but this haraami wants to take this country towards civil war by saving his haraam wealth. Godfather needs to be locked behind bars before things get out of hand, its similar to that mafia don altaf hussain, despite the contrary his supporters still call him Quaid.

This mean that there's not a single capable person in party to become president ... you name should include "shareef" that's the only criteria ..... and they talk about democracy :disagree:

@koolio

his political career is finished, he thinks by winning next elections,

On one hand you say his political career is finished; and you are also implying that he may be able to win elections- both cannot be simultaneously true, can they be, sir?

Mate I dont know how politics work in India, but in Pakistan anything is possible, since he has been disqualified by the SC on two occasions, he cannot make any political decisions, but despite the rulings he is going against the SC.

Wait for media ban on Nawaz's speeches ... just like Altaf. Both traitors and gangsters.

Not just media ban, I think after this contemptuous move, PMLn as party should be banned. When the SC has told them he cannot hold any position whatsoever so this defiance should result in the party getting banned.

These are the screams of a dying corrupt elite. They have no choice but to rebel, in order to save themselves somehow. But it won't work.

The grip that Altaf had, what happened to his pictures? Same fate awaits Nawaz.
