ISLAMABAD (September 24, 2010) : Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday announced additional pledge of $200 million to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the flood-hit areas of Pakistan. He made this announcement while addressing a high-level session of the UN General Assembly on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) being held in New York.
Giving details, about the Chinese assistance to Pakistan, Deputy Chief of the Mission Huang Xilian at a press conference here at Chinese embassy on Thursday said China had previously offered about $47 million in aid to Pakistan following the devastating floods, which affected 21 million people and left 12 million in need of emergency food aid.
Huang Xilian said Chinese assistance to Pakistan is without any condition and purely on humanitarian base to help a friend. He said, "In light of great loss of lives and property inflicted by the devastated floods that hit Pakistan since late July, China, as Pakistan's close neighbour and all weather friend, feels as much pain as the brotherly country does and has offered sincere, timely and unconditional assistance to the flood hit brotherly country."
Huang Xilian said Chinese government and people have been lending a helping hand in a variety of ways to help their Pakistani brothers and sisters to show love and care. He said Chinese assistance testified to the brotherly friendship between the two governments and people and writes a new chapter in China-Pakistan history. He said it is for the first time that China provided, such an unprecedented large scale of humanitarian aid to a foreign country.
China, he said, is one of the first countries to pledge assistance to Pakistan in the immediate aftermath of the floods. He said first consignment of RMB 10 million urgent needs, tents and medicine delivered shortly on August 14. The Chinese assistance after the fresh pledge of $200 million has reached to $250 million at the moment. He said apart from the efforts of Chinese, the Chinese People's Liberation Army also provided RMB 10 million relief supplies to Pakistan Military early August.
He said Chinese people have also contributed to help the flood victims adding that total donations from the private sector was RMB 14 million. He said China also sent rescue and medical teams to Pakistan with medicines, equipment and other necessary items in the flood affected areas and first medical team was working in Thatta region.
He said China has sent to Pakistan some 200 doctors and paramedics in three medical rescue teams by now, that is highest number of China's foreign medical rescue. The Deputy Head of Chinese Mission said China also sent 101 trucks carrying RMB 20 million humanitarian aid by road to the flood affected people in the upper Hunza area in Gilgit-Baltistan.
This 3190 tons of supplies include 1850 tons of wheat flour, 737 tons of rice, 90 tons of milk powder, 30 tons of table salt, 193,32 tons of cooking oil, 180 tons of sugar, 83.35 tons of diesel, 20 tons of petrol, and six tons of medicine and this is sufficient enough to meet the basic need of the 25,000 local population for next six month affected in Gilgit Baltistan.
He said Chinese diplomats working in the Chinese embassy also donated Rs 600,000 to the people in the flood inflected areas in Pakistan. He said Chinese ambassador Liu Jian also travelled to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and handed over the donation to local officials while Chinese embassy also donated Rs 1.2 million to the Thatta region.
The Chinese embassy, he said, also cancelled its reception of 61st anniversary of China at Chinese embassy saved Rs 1.2 million for the flood hit areas and donation was handed over to Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza by the Chinese ambassador Liu Jian. He said, "China and Pakistan as true friends have always stood together and supported each other in times of need." China has provided timely, efficient, sincere and generous assistance to Pakistan to the best of its capacity and we have not attached any conditions to our assistance or asked for anything in return," he added.
