PM takes swipe at US for criticising Bangladesh’s human rights record

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has laid into the United States for criticising Bangladesh's democracy and human rights record while at the same time giving sanctuary to a killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Taking a swipe at the US, she said, "America talks about democracy and harbours murderers. I don't know why. But they are apparently the most democratic country in the world!”

The Prime Minister made the remarks while virtually attending the unveiling ceremony of memoirs published by the Supreme Court, titled 'Bangabandhu and the Judiciary' and 'Nyay Kantha', on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com.

Rashed Chowdhury, who was sentenced to death in the case over the assassination of Bangabandhu, has been in the US for a long time. Another convicted murderer, Noor Chowdhury, is residing in neighbouring Canada.

The US government recently hosted the Summit for Democracy but it did not invite Bangladesh to the virtual conference. Dhaka has also taken issue with Washington for imposing sanctions on seven present and former members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for 'human rights abuse'.

In particular, the US State Department linked former RAB chief Benazir Ahmed, currently serving as the inspector general of Bangladesh Police, and another commanding officer of the elite police unit, to the ‘extrajudicial’ killing of Teknaf Municipality councillor Akramul Haque in 2018.

On the issue of sanctions, Hasina said, "In a place like America, people always talk about justice, democracy, the right to vote, and human rights. But our human rights were violated and we didn't get justice.

"Then the trial [of Bangabandhu's killers] was held but the murderers are taking shelter there. Canada has sheltered Nur, and Rashed is still in the United States. Then we have to hear from them about the rule of law, democracy and justice -- that's what amazes me."

Hasina underscored her government's commitment to bringing the killers of Bangabandhu back to the country to face justice.

"Since I came to power, I have repeatedly asked every president of the United States about how they are continuing to shelter a convicted felon. How does their judiciary allow it? We still haven't been able to bring [Rashed] back."

Drawing on her personal experiences, Hasina stressed the need to ensure justice for all. “We want to get justice all the time. I don't want anyone to cry for justice after losing their parents as I did. We are the victims and we know the pain of not getting justice."

Addressing the judiciary, she added, "You must ensure that justice is served. That's what we want. And as long as I am in government, I will do whatever's needed to do that."

US terrorists like Bush and Clinton must pay for their crimes against humanity.
This is a wrong move by this woman, going into confrontation and slagging off the u.s only makes her look bad.

USA look bad, she looks good.

The US and Bangladesh involved in some strange war of words:lol:

India and Bangladesh can have Khatta-Meetha batein, given the husband-wife relationship per our FM with Toupee.

But if India is husband, then who is US? :-)

I mean for most of Bangladeshs history wasn't it ruled by autocratic leaders?
breaking away was because rather be ruled by your own ethnic autocratic rulers than some autocratic ruler from another ethnic group

So I don't completely buy this democracy and human right thing when afterwards for vast majority of Bangladeshi history
Its government was autocratic in nature

Yes.

We broke away because west Pakistanis didn't agree to federalize, democratic power transition and resorted to extreme human rights violations against us then east Pakistanis.

And about your ethnic claims, it was west Pakistanis who were racist against east Pakistanis.

You're free to believe whatever you want sir.

We failed in democracy and human rights front which is regrettable and very unfortunate. But, we are doing OK (ish) on other fronts.

A Narcissist is a person who has an excessive interest in or admiration of themselves. Narcissists are those who think the world revolves around them.

President Trump is one narcissist. He was going to destroy democracy in America by playing hardball games even after the US election result was declared. But, being a narcissist he thought he is upholding the spirit of democracy.

Our great Hasina Bibi is no worse than Trump. She really believes in the false statements she is making as the reality and truth. This shows how she admires herself and her brand of democracy whereby the vote boxes are filled with ballot papers before the dawn.

She also believes that the world revolves around BD, her father, and herself. So, she is sick with narcissism. She is a vengeful woman who is bent to punish those who oppose her and opposed her father.

However, by criticizing America for that country's failure to uphold human rights issues, she is throwing eggs to hard rock. But, being a narcissist, she thinks of herself as the rock, and America as the egg she can break into pieces.

After all, to her, as BD is the center of the world, and she is the center of BD, therefore, all international politics must revolve around her.

Why should Biden be important when Hasina is still living?

. .
Yes.

I don't like democracy so I don't even call it a "failure"
Since you yourself said it was for democracy but since it was not a democracy for most of it's history, when the leader of the Democratic struggle himself became an autocratic ruler, his children became autocratic (who are supposed to follow his vision for the nation)

So we can guess it was not for democracy purely but self-determination or any other thing of that sort but not democracy- it was not the ideal that was nessacary in the new country while it was beneficial in the old one

Reason I don't like democracy is exactly why you would find it convenient to preach democracy
When you're the majority against another area who themselves are underpopulated at the time and multi-ethnic so in a pure democracy stand no chance, may even get fragmented along more divisions, more rebellions and resentments
So in that case democracy is a useful tool to overpower them through sheer size

But when your on your own this is not as important and is replaced by autocratic rule to better serve the country

This is the reason why it was not for "democracy" - it was convenient at the time to use democracy as it was favoring one side while it was a bloodbath for the other
So it was probably a rallying cry but not the reason- self-determination was, being ruled by your own autocratic ruler is more acceptable than by someone else (not criticizing - part of human nature)

As later displayed by the leader of that same damocratic struggle who when getting power became an autocratic ruler
As at that time democracy wasn't convenient and autocratic rule served best

OK just to refresh the subject this is what the Treasury Dept. circular said in the US,

"SERIOUS HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSE IN BANGLADESH: RAPID ACTION BATTALION

Widespread allegations of serious human rights abuse in Bangladesh by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)—as part of the Bangladeshi government’s war on drugs—threaten U.S. national security interests by undermining the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the economic prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.

RAB is a joint task force founded in 2004 and composed of members of the police, army, navy, air force, and border guards seconded to the RAB from their respective units. Its mandate includes internal security, intelligence gathering related to criminal activities, and government-directed investigations. NGOs have alleged that RAB and other Bangladeshi law enforcement are responsible for more than 600 disappearances since 2009, nearly 600 extrajudicial killings since 2018, and torture. Some reports suggest these incidents target opposition party members, journalists, and human rights activists.

RAB is designated pursuant to E.O. 13818 for being a foreign entity that is responsible for or complicit in, or has directly or indirectly engaged in, serious human rights abuse.

Additionally, the following individuals are designated pursuant to E.O. 13818 for being foreign persons who are or have been a leader or official of RAB, an entity that has engaged in, or whose members have engaged in, serious human rights abuse relating to their tenure:

  • Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Director General, RAB, April 15, 2020 to present
  • Benazir Ahmed, former Director General, RAB, January 2015 to April 14, 2020
  • Khan Mohammad Azad, Additional Director General (Operations), RAB, March 16, 2021 to present
  • Tofayel Mustafa Sorwar, former Additional Director General (Operations), RAB, June 27, 2019 to March 16, 2021
  • Mohammad Jahangir Alam, former Additional Director General (Operations), RAB, September 17, 2018 to June 27, 2019
  • Mohammad Anwar Latif Khan, former Additional Director General (Operations), RAB, April 28, 2016 to September 17, 2018
Today, the U.S. Department of State has announced visa restrictions under Section 7031(c) of the FY 2021 Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act on Benazir Ahmed due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights, making him ineligible for entry into the United States."

Sanctions against RAB is not a one-point program by the USA. Unless the GoB refrains it from doing the illegal killing and enforced disappearances of opposition people, there is every possibility that the USA will enlarge its loops to include also Police and others from where RAB members are recruited.

There is every possibility that unless the killing/ disappearance files are opened to the UN, it may put its own sanctions against the RAB, BA, or Police troops to join its Peacekeeping missions. In that case, only Ansar troops may be recruited, but they will need vigorous training to become eligible in those missions.

Hasina is wrong if she thinks by sneering at the USA she can dissuade that country and the UN from doing their respective jobs at hand concerning BD.

If Army cannot conduct UN missions then there will be repercussions against Hasina.

You are right - she should tread lightly.

Stupid woman thinks world politics works like village politics in Bangladesh - open crass humki-dhamki threats, bollywood style dramabazi, kidnappings, lawless terror of goondas wielding machetes and long bamboo sticks.

I am rethinking why Hasina Bibi said all those strong bla bla to America. I think the govt people in America being politicians themselves perfectly understand the true motive of Hasina jab at America.

They understand that the jabbings are for BD domestic consumption. This direct verbal attack on America pleases her own supporters and this will cause her people to rally behind her.

Since the GoB has already accepted the conditions of military assistance from America, therefore, I do not think this small jabbing will be taken very unkindly by the people of Biden administration. They fully understand her motive. They will just hide their wry smile.
