Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged all not to build indiscriminate establishments in Cox's Bazar, saying her government is implementing projects to ensure its overall development maintaining natural beauty to make it a major global tourist destination.

"It is solely needed to build Cox's Bazar as a global tourist city. So, I request all particularly the inhabitants of Cox's Bazar not to construct establishments in an unplanned way," she said.

The prime minister said this while inaugurating a newly constructed eco-friendly multi-storey office building of the Cox's Bazar Development Authority, joining virtually from her official Ganabhaban residence here.

The Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Cox's Bazar Development Authority jointly organised the function at Beer Muktijoddha Playground in Cox's Bazar.

The prime minister said she had already instructed to prepare a master plan to ensure planned development surrounding the Cox's Bazar following the international standard to attract both foreign and local tourists.

Sheikh Hasina asked the authorities concerned to focus on maintaining natural beauty, environment and biodiversity in taking development programmes for Cox's Bazar beach.

"We will have to take development programmes for Cox's Bazar beach, not only with bricks and woods, but rather to integrate nature, environment and biodiversity," she said.

Reminding the 1991 cyclone, the premier stressed creating deep tamarisk tree forest along the longest and beautiful beach in the world to protect it from cyclones and tidal surges, saying, "We have to keep in mind the 1991 cyclone."

"If this can be done in a planned way, it will not be tough to create a forest on the 80 miles or 120 kilometres long beach. We must have to protect our environment," she said.

She also emphasised preserving nature to protect people from natural calamities.

State Minister of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed and its Secretary Md. Shahid Ullah Khandaker, spoke on the occasion while Chairman of Cox's Bazar Development Authority Lt. Col (retd) Forkan Ahmed, gave the welcome address.

A video presentation on the measures to make a modern and greener Cox's Bazar was screened at the function.

Sheikh Hasina said her government has been working to link Cox's Bazar with other parts of the countryside by side development of road, rail and air connections to ensure easy communication facilities for the tourists.

The prime minister said her government has already started flight operations between Sylhet and Cox's Bazar.

"The government is working to launch flight operations to Cox's Bazar, from all the domestic airports such as Barishal, Rajshahi, and Syedpur in phases," she added.

The prime minister said her government is working to upgrade the Cox's Bazar Airport as an international one because it falls on the international air route

The Cox's Bazar International Airport will be the refueling hub of the East and the Westbound aircrafts due to its geographical location, she said, adding that once the refueling place was in Hong Kong, then Thailand, Singapore and now Dubai.

"But actually Cox's Bazar will be the place of refueling for the international air traffic," she stated.

The premier said that her government has already constructed Dhaka-Chattogram Highway and is building Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway, which is going on in full swing.

She said the construction work of the much-awaited rail link from Dohazari, in Chattogram to Gumdum in Cox's Bazar is underway.

"We are constructing the rail link from Chattogram for smooth transportation of the people to the tourist city and the works will be completed soon," she said.

The prime minister said they have taken special programmes to ensure the overall development of various islands such as Maheshkhali, Teknaf, Sonadia, Shah Pari, Kutubdia, and Saint Martin to transform Cox's Bazar into an attractive global tourist destination.

She mentioned that her government has already built a marine drive from Cox's Bazar to Teknaf and is planning to expand up to Chattogram, saying, "We have taken programmes to this end."

The prime minister said her government would build the country's best-ever international convention center in Cox's Bazar.

She continued: "I want to do that in Cox's Bazar, not in any other place even in the capital city. It will attract tourists and will be the best place to hold international seminars."

The prime minister said they have built an international cricket stadium in Cox's Bazar and is set to construct a football stadium and others for holding international tournaments there.

In addition to the measures, she said her government has been taking every possible measure to attract foreign and local tourists in large numbers.

The premier said they have built flats at Khurushkul for sheltering the climate refugees who were displaced by the 1991 cyclone.

She added that her government is also going to build a modern dry fish hub for them (climate refugees) as most of them are fishermen.

Sheikh Hasina stressed the need for conducting research on the marine resources to use it in the national economic development after Bangladesh had won a vast sea area from neighbouring countries through legal battles initiated by her government.

She said her government has constructed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University alongside marine academies aimed at building an efficient workforce to tap the potential of the blue economy.

The prime minister said the government has built Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute and is planning to construct a sea aquarium which requires huge money and skilled manpower.

Mentioning that Bangladesh has a lack of skilled manpower to run a sea aquarium, she said her government is taking measures in this regard.

Rain forests and marshlands?

I just posted images of Rain forests and marshlands. There are no deserts in Bangladesh.

95% of the area is very fertile, occupied and arable.

Rainy season is intense and three months out of the year.

However winters are not humid and weather is like Southern California for most of the winter - very pleasant.

Foggy in the morning, and sun cuts through by lunchtime.

November to February is the best time to visit and is also the season for common celebrations and festivals.

Nope! We should focus on domestic tourism first by building proper transport and infrastructures then we should think about international tourism.

Dhaka itself is enough to give us bad reputation among international tourists. People travel to other country to have good experience not bad one...

Cox's Bazar in it's current form is nothing but a miniature Dhaka. The same haphazard, unplanned building boom with little regard to keep enough space for roads, parks or other open recreational spaces. Narrow, potholed roads are clogged with Rickshaws and Easybikes. Garbage everywhere. Millions of domestic tourists visit this place, yet not a single good shopping mall or Multiplex cinema. It is cheaper to visit India or even Thailand than to go Cox's Bazar. We as a nation totally failed to grasp what tourism is all about.

I thought some govt. entity had a city plan for Cox's Bazaar. The budget for the main Rail Station and airport terminal are in the hundreds of crores. Where is the city planning for the tourist hotel areas and the phased execution?

It has become like a bazaar....low class people encroaching with their third-rate habits everywhere. :(

Very little!

I think Cox's Bazaar should have been turned into a "Special Economic and Political Zone".

It should be like a mini-Hong Kong that would need special permits for BD citizens to work and travel there.

Make it a showcase area in BD with minimal corruption, excellent planning and world-class infrastructure.

The area could highlight what BD could achieve across the whole country 15-20 years down.

What does Bangladesh offer to an international tourist?
Nothing. Bangladesh is not a place any foreigner should venture in unless he is determined to visit all the countries of the world. But if somebody is still adamant, we have embassy staff working in foreign embassies of Bangladesh to dissuade them not to come to Bangladesh and get disappointed, Instead, they offer such prospective tourists an alternate tourist destination, India.

PM stresses building Cox's Bazar as global tourist city
Cox's Bazar will remain a tourist spot for the BD local people only whatever Hasina Bibi wants to build there.

I talked to a few Japanese. They just do not appreciate what we love to call the longest beach in the world. I have heard many Japanese think it is like a long sea desert without attractions.

Everything needed to attract foreigners is missing in CB. Chinese people are already flooding the coasts of the SE Asian countries. BD may try to lure them. But, I am skeptical.

More than 32 million Chinese people visited ASEAN shores before the arrival of Covid. But, even now, the figure is more than 4 million. What attractions BD can provide them to lure to CB?

Hasina, as usual, will waste money in CB that will not attract foreigners. However, I am sure our own people will love it and the money will be returned because our people love to spend money.

Bold part': We do not have to worry about what our Embassies do to attract foreign tourists. Rather, they discourage them by some other means.

In the case of Japan, the Embassy has the catalogs printed in English for the English speaking people. No one takes initiative to translate the booklets in Japanese and our Embassy staff are not good in not only Japanese but also in English.

The same is true for Peking or other Capitals. Now, Hasina or Rehana Bibi needs a few extra bucks and a new project is needed to enrich these two plus Joy Kumar.
