And here we have another case of government interference in market actions.

Why o why does the government in Pakistan need to have a hand in everything? Medicine, petrol, wheat, rice, sugar (on one end only), fruit, vegetable, everything under the sun.

The governmet in Pakistan acts like a municipal committee rather than a government.

Leave these things to the market to decide, and you enact strong and independent regulators to act as a safeguard against cartelization and exploitation. That's what a government is supposed to do, create institutions and let them run independently, not micro manage. Har cheez apnay hath main lene say kaam nhn chalta.

Now the govt has decided not to increase the prices, ab 2 maheenay baad jab companies will stop production, then the government will plead with them to restart production and the price will be what the manufacturer demands.

Panadol is already short in the market because GSK is running into a loss making the medicine. They will soon stop production (or they already have I am not sure).

How can a manufacturer buy raw material at market price but sell at regulated price?

Aur woh saray shehzaday jo kehte hain keh this government does not care about political capital and is not making populist decisions, how do you justify this? This is as populist of a decision as it gets.

It goes against all market principles, it goes against all manufacturing principles, it goes against all logic.

By not increasing prices now we are staring at an even bigger problem which will require even more money 2 months down the line.

Stupid.

• Health ministry proposed increase in prices of 10 medicines under ‘hardship cases’
• Drugs include prescriptions for women’s fertility, malaria, hypoglycaemia and anaesthetics

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday vetoed another proposal seeking an increase in the prices of 10 medicines up to 25 per cent, saying he cannot support such a move.

However, a senior official of the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS), wishing not to be named, said the majority of the medicines whose prices were sought to be raised were meant for rare diseases, while one was included on the directions of the Sindh High Court.

Earlier on Aug 16 as well, the federal cabinet had rejected a summary presented by the NHS Ministry suggesting an increase in the prices of 35 medicines, and stated that the price of no medicine would be increased in the future without the approval of the cabinet.

According to the agenda of Tuesday’s meeting of the cabinet, the ministry proposed an increase in prices of 10 medicines under hardship cases.

It is worth mentioning that if the production of a medicine becomes unviable due to an increase in the cost of raw material, the ministry could move cases under the hardship category to allow the manufacturing companies to increase the maximum retail price and ensure availability of the drugs in the market.

However, the prime minister instantly said he could not support any move to increase the prices of medicines. Following the premier’s stance, the entire cabinet decided to reject the proposal.

A statement was even issued from the office of Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel that he also rejected the proposal.

According to a ministry official, the majority of the medicines on the agenda were meant for rare issues such as women’s fertility, anti-malaria, anaesthesia, etc.

“One of the medicines/solutions was meant for hypoglycemia and its price is just Rs2, so the company refused to continue its production due to unviability at such a low cost. We had suggested increasing the price by around 25pc but even that case was rejected,” the official said.

Hypoglycemia occurs when the blood sugar (glucose) level falls too low for bodily functions to continue.

“The case of one of the medicines on the list was received from the Sindh High Court, as a pharmaceutical company had approached it seeking a price increase. We included the medicine, meant for heart patients, to the list but all of them were rejected by the cabinet,” he added.

Earlier, the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) had deplored the cabinet’s Aug 16 decision that it said would result in complete unavailability of the medicines, which were being sold at lower rates than the cost of their production. These drugs were registered in the 1970s and 80s when the dollar exchange rate was very low.

“As the dollar exchange rate was very low at that time, low prices were fixed, and till now the medicines were being sold at Re1 and Rs2 per tablet. Similarly, the medicines meant for cancer patients are also being sold at low rates. Since the companies cannot sell them for more than the maximum retail price (MRP), their cost of production is exceeding the MRP, making it unviable for the companies to continue manufacturing the medicines,” association representative Mr Hamid Raza had told Dawn back then.

Meanwhile, ministry spokesperson Sajid Shah told Dawn that on the directions of Health Minister Patel, a crackdown has been launched on spurious and unregistered medicines across the country.

He said during a raid in Peshawar, unregistered medicines worth Rs35 million were recovered and 25 stores sealed.

“Similarly, teams of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan have been raiding medical stores in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and other cities,” Mr Shah added.

Health Minister Patel had on Monday announced a crackdown on spurious and unregistered medicines.

Government in Pakistan need to have a hand in everything like medicine, petrol, wheat, rice, sugar, fruit, vegetable, electricity etc because people expect that government will rationalise the prices of all commodities. They have to face opposition for all these things, this is the sole reason that opposition would be more popular than government:

While in government he used to say that he is not in government to keep a check on potato or tomato prices.

Tackling inflation does not need micro managing or market manipulation.

Jeez buddy, have some sense at least. You control inflation through macro measures, not by conducting raids under an ADC or fixing market prices. That leads to even more inflation. Ab yeh mat poochna kaisay, khud research karna us par.

I GSK's Panadol is not being manufactured why don't people switch to Calpol which has same formula and easily available??

Though GSK has other demands including permission to import raw material from India.

Opposition? Govt has no opposition in parliament so stop giving lame excuses. Opposition leader in NA is Raja Riaz - what problems has he caused for chtay Mian Saab? IK according to you has only been holding concerts and thats it. Most of the media has already cutoff his coverage by 90% so enough with the lame excuses.

While in government he used to say that he is not in government to keep a check on potato or tomato prices.
Isnt IK a traitor and terrorist according to SS and PMLN? Why bother with what he said and did - surely Mian Mohammed Nawaz Sharif is a much bigger political leader than IK, so his brother doesn’t need to follow or resciprocate what IK said or did as PM.

I rate PTI as best ever opposition party Pakistan has ever produced even better than JI, whether it is in parliament or not, though PTI is very poor in "parliamentary opposition", remember Ch. Nisar would grill PPP everyday in Parliamenry proceedings, same is for ANP and Pushtoon Tahffuz Movement.

I would never call traitor to anyone.

Okay. So, what is shehbaz in govt. for?
IK at least made some claims about his goals being welfare state, justice etc. What are you guys planning on doing? I mean, after you fix the mess IK left (imo, the only mess IK left is now in power).
After you clean that up, what will the nawaz sharif offer this nation next? He's already build the atomic bomb, so is he going to build time travel machine for Pakistan now?

Certain pain medications that I need are in very short supply and are being black marketed just because these cunts in power want to exercise control over prices. Companies simply have slowed down production or have removed them entirely from pharmacy shelves so they can sell them on prices that earn them a good margin.

No wonder hakoomat walay bhi aisay mashwaray dete hain...jab un kay supporter aisay dain gay.

People should follow the model of KP government to control inflation, which they have developed in last 10 years. By the way, DC Peshawar does not bother to issue the rate of poultry, just directly issues the rate set by the poultry cartel, good governance at its best.

PM Shehbaz should bow down in front of pharma cartel just like KP government or previous government of Imran Khan.

The pharmaceutical industry of Pakistan is going through tough times but mainly for the multinationals. Over the last decade, many foreign names have left the country and Sanofi Aventis and Bayer are the latest ones on the list. The situation will only become worse over time. The dollar parity, the taxes on the APIs, the high margins given to local companies along with a low check and balance on local pharma companies' import of API from destination other than the approved location is making it difficult to do business ethically and within approved guidelines.
Foreign companies can be penalized abroad even if someone, their vendor, or a 3rd party does anything wrong even in Pakistan or indulges in under-the-table deals. Such laws do not apply to local companies.
So where PM has rejected the summary, if things don't improve in the not too distant future then we will be left at the mercy of local companies. Either hike the price or decrease duties or provide a slightly better if not equivocal playing level for the multinationals. The current scenario is nothing but a recipe for disaster

These steps are often cosmetic and counter-productive.

Guys will you shut up? Tajarbakar government hai yeh, clearly they know how to run( down the drain) the economy.
