Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought Japanese support to fulfil Bangladesh's vision to become a developed nation by 2041.

The prime minister on Thursday said, "Japan-Bangladesh-Comprehensive Partnership" has been launched to take the friendly ties between the two countries to a new height of a strategic partnership.

"We have launched the 'Japan-Bangladesh Comprehensive Partnership' to elevate the friendly relationship to a new height.

Sheikh Hasina said, “Our comprehensive partnership is now poised to be raised to a strategic partnership in the near future."

In a video message aired in a programme in Tokyo marking the celebration of the 50 years of cooperation between Bangladesh and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), she sought Japanese support to fulfil Bangladesh's vision to become a developed nation by 2041.

She recalled that Bangladesh remained deeply grateful for the invaluable support and contribution of Japan and its people during the War of Liberation, reports BSS.

Sheikh Hasina expressed her belief that sincerity, friendship and mutual respect are the core values for long-lasting bilateral relations.

Bangladesh and Japan have been maintaining and furthering relations based on those values and common interests, she stated.

She recalled that Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid the foundation of Bangladesh-Japan relations through his maiden visit to Tokyo in 1973.

The premier also remembered her own visits to Japan in 1992, 1997, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2019 as well as the visit of the then Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe to Bangladesh in 2014 to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Highlighting JICA's contribution to the development of Bangladesh, the premier said Bangladesh recognises Japan as one of the most trusted friends and the single largest development partner.

She said that starting from USD 10.6 million commodity grant aid in the financial year 1971-72, JICA's financial assistance portfolio to Bangladesh now stands at USD 28 billion.

To this end, she said Matarbari Coal-based Power Plant, Matarbari Port Development Project, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Rail Bridge over the river Jamuna, Metro-rail network in Dhaka and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Expansion Project are being implemented with JICA's assistance.

The Prime Minister said, "Bangladesh is marching forward to fulfil the Father of the Nation's dream of turning Bangladesh into a developed nation, while it has already attained recognition for graduating to a developing country in 2026."

On the occasion of the 50 years of the Bangladesh-JICA relationship, Sheikh Hasina conveyed her warmest greetings to the Emperor and the Empress of Japan as well as extended her deepest greetings and heartiest felicitations to the Prime Minister and the friendly people of Japan.

How a country’s PM can think his/her country can develop by getting all the helps not only from Japan but from all the developed countries together? Can they help BD to develop?

Western countries have been helping BD since 1947 and then since 1971. But, it remains an underdeveloped basket countrY.

Hasina Bibi should not talk cheap. She should rather industrialize the country. This will produce new wealth, the govt will get many types of taxes, and this money will be spent on beautification projects.

Hasina’s policy is to put the cart in front of the horses. So, there is no prospect of durable development. There is no shortcut route to achieve this.

BD is on well on it's way to diversifying exports with home electronics, shipbuilding, pharma and IT.

Just one company Walton will export more than 100 million US dollars in home electronics in this fiscal ending June 30 - growing many hundreds of per cent each year now.


Climate change - BD has been working with the Netherlands for many years now on sea defences. Holland are the foremost experts in this area.

Bangladesh has been partnering with the Netherlands on this who has experience building dykes, bunds and tackling sea water incursion. Since three decades ago.

Yes, Holland is helping BD for a long three decades, yet our own people could not be mobilized to learn and do similar things. No other country, except, perhaps, Pakistan would keep on getting foreign helps to do tiny things.

As far as I understand, ordinary people cannot be trained to become civil engineers. I also do not think the BD govt cares anything about setting up institutions in the private level.

Your old mindset is talking about govt engineers. However, it is the private company engineers who would learn how to do the PLANNING, survey and design/drawings of a project and Holland engineers train them in respective fields and go back.

In the 2nd step, a trained local company is given the project and the Holland company is made the Consultant. This is how our own people learn more and then contribute, and the nation develops by itself.

I have never heard our talented politicians ever thought in this line. Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and China went through this process.

But, Hasina/ Khaleda have little knowledge on how to make transfer of technology to happen. In this way, Golden BD will remain as dependent on foreign countries as it is now and was in the past.

Japan does not get involved in local politics. Period. Their main interest is establishing low-wage manufacturing, same like they did in early stages in China.

Japan lets the West do whatever politicking they do.

Their other main focus is building infra projects (Marubeni, Kajima, Obayashi and Shimizu Corporations all involved).

They are involved in the seven mega projects inside Dhaka (Capital), mainly in building a very large six-phase metro (1st stage completed), a huge addition to the airport. and also in three/four very large projects outside Dhaka (Very large Rail bridges) and building export zones in various locations.

Needless to say - Chinese large govt. agencies like MBEC and CCECC are also heavily involved in Bangladesh.

They follow US policy closely. For example, Japan semi con expansion plan in China are mull becos of US advise. If BD is not part of US grand plan. many policies will not be favourable for BD or economy development will be hindered.
