PM, president to deliver speeches in Urdu on foreign trips, SC told
IRFAN HAIDER

ISLAMABAD: The federal government told the Supreme Court on Friday that the prime minister had issued directives to grant official status to Urdu language, after which the president, the prime minister, federal and provincial ministers, and government employees will deliver speeches in Urdu — whether inside or outside the country.

Appearing before a three-member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, Federal Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Azam said following orders from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, websites for government institutions, utility bills, driving licences, passports and other documents will carry text in Urdu as well.

Earlier, the federal government had asked heads of departments to implement a cabinet decision to gradually introduce Urdu as the official language.

According to a circular, heads of government departments have also been asked to propose ways through which Urdu could replace English as the official language.

On May 14 this year, the cabinet decided that Urdu would replace English as the official language as stated in Article 251 of the Constitution.

Article 251 of the Constitution
(1) The National language of Pakistan is Urdu, and arrangements shall be made for its being used for official and other purposes within fifteen years from the commencing day.

(2) Subject to clause (1), the English language may be used for official purposes until arrangements are made for its replacement by Urdu.

(3) Without prejudice to the status of the national language, a provincial assembly may by law prescribe measures for the teaching, promotion and use of a provincial language in addition to the national language.

pathetic backward tribal thinking.

Foreign trips and speeches should be in the most convenient language for the hosts.

Preferably local language
if not then English.

Example

If PM is in Norway, he must used local language to connect to local people.
If however he is not comfortable with that, he should use English.

A language closet to the local people makes us better connect with them.

And why to forget that Pakistan is blessed with expertise in English rivaled only by a handful of regions around the world.

Other people look at us in awe when we can easily switch between English and Urdu and possibly a third language (like Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi or Balochi).

This type of strength should be encouraged in today's global village.

Instead some of us want to drag us back to 1900 AD.

pathetic.

Any examples of such a case? (Except where both countries have a common language?)

Will it make a difference & if so to whom ?

People move forward not backwards .

Some here would rather travel on Donkeys and sleep on the heap of sand just like 600 AD.

pathetic but real.

Luckily most of the educated youth has already abandoned these stone age tribals.

Jango bhai

even when a visiting PM cannot speak local language, they make a huge difference if they add a single sentence from local language.

Connections are immediate even if you say "Salam Alykum / namaste / Adab / Aloha " in local language.

Just build more on it,

and see locals go crazy. This is human nature to hear in our local language.

No doubt about it.

The French do it it's upholding national values, Italian do it, upholding national values, Iran does it, upholding national values, Spain does it, upholding national values, Argentinians, Brazilians, Arabs, Russians especially (People call them bada$$ for the same reason), Chinese do it...all uphold national values. These are just the ones that I have seen with my own eyes...there must be more.

Pakistan does it, it becomes pathetic backward cave thinking? Why the double standards folks?

If speaking your national language makes you look all backward and "paindu", then so be it...

Our inferiority complex still hasn't gone anywhere!

Very good step!

Just like every self respecting country, we should also start using our national language in all official engagements. Even the smallest countries in Europe, Asia and elsewhere are doing it.

And it has been proven teaching kids in their national languages speed up the learning process by several folds. Just look at Japan, China, South Korea, small countries in Europe - all of them promote their languages and all of them are developed!

No harm in learning English as a foreign language, but for God sake do not make it some kind of "status symbol"!

Both are different things.

Have you ever seen the whole press briefing in the local language?

Pakistan is among handful of countries in the world where we are blessed with the ability to speak multiple language.

your example is pathetic case of comparing oranges and apples.

or worse a biduan to a civilized person.
