ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday inaugurated the Pakistan-China Friendship Tunnels, which have been constructed by China over the Attabad Lake in Gilgit-Baltistan's Hunza valley.

The seven kilometre long five tunnels are part of the 24km long portion of the Karakorum Highway (KKH) which was damaged in 2010 due to land sliding at Attabad.


Two bridges and 78 small bridges have also been constructed on the rebuilt section of the highway, Radio Pakistan reported.

The tunnels have been constructed by the National Highway Authority (NHA) in collaboration with the China Road and Bridge Corporation to restore part of the road which had submerged under the Attabad Lake.

The project has been completed in a span of three years and two months.


NHA officials briefed the prime minister on the details of the project and status of upgradation of other parts of KKH.

Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Governor GB Barjees Tahir, Chief Minister GB Hafeezur Rehman and China's Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, the premier was received at Gilgit Airport by chief minister GB. The chief minister briefed the prime minister about progress of other developmental projects in the area and performance of GB government.

oh yeah new low ...is it not better than inaugurating 300 Dam whose money was gambled at stock exchange n thn lost, or some million trees out of which only ONE plantation is confirmed ...or justifying tonnes of minerals contract to some hot shot financier ....why couldnt we say how much this tunnel wud help local ppl .. improve connectivity

No problem, if he is happy and like to do this since that is most appropriate job for him. I will ask my relatives about any repair works in their areas and they will duly invite the pm to inaugurate...for example a street light, a new speed bump. etc

Don't you think that Pakistan is going through difficult times and pm should be doing some serious work on policies and could send anyone to inaugurate a repaired tunnel. But how would you understand this with your typical noonie apporach. Everything has been left to the army to do whether it is action against terrorists, corruption or even making foreign policies.

These projects run themselves. Even if the Ganja was not PM and anyone else would be sitting in govt, the project would have been completed.

These Ganjas and Zardaris are a curse on Pakistan.

Shame on Nawaz shareef for doing some work. Don't he know it's a crime against humanity in Pakistan. He should just have planted 1 trillion trees instead of completing the tunnel. I'm sure people could just have drived on trees more easily than bridges.
