India declares liberalised visa policy for Canadians | Zee News
Ottawa: India on Wednesday announced a liberalised visa policy for Canadian nationals visiting the country, days after extending a similar scheme to French citizens.

Announcing this here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the new visa policy would support greater engagement and people-to-people contacts between India and Canada.

India will issue Electronic Visa Authorisation for tourist visas for Canadian nationals. They will also now be eligible for 10-year visas, said Modi, the first Indian prime minister to visit Canada in 42 years.

Modi is on a state visit to Canada following trips to France and Germany.

During Modi's France visit, Paris had also informed New Delhi of its decision to implement a scheme for expedited 48 hours visa issuance for Indian tourists while the Prime Minister had in turn announced electronic visa facility for French tourists.

Ottawa: Turning a new chapter in its relationship with Canada, India on Wednesday clinched a multi-million-dollar deal for uranium to power its civilian nuclear programme. India also announced visa on arrival for Canadians.


The $350-million uranium agreement, which was signed by Cameco and the Atomic Energy Commission of India in the presence of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Stephen Harper, marked a new chapter in India's ties with Canada, which had imposed sanctions on India after its nuclear tests. Under the deal which runs through 2020, Cameco will supply 7.1 million pounds of uranium concentrate to India, as per IANS.

Welcoming the deal which has been reached after protracted talks, Modi said at a joint press conference with Harper: "The uranium deal is the mark of Canada's trust in India."

Canada - Uranium supplies for 5 years

No businessman can sign such deals , these are Government to Government deals.

It was a reaffirmation of bonds that crossed national borders and community identities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi not only kept the 8,000-strong audience of mostly Indo-Canadians roaring with approval on their feet during his speech of one hour and ten minutes at Toronto’s Ricoh Coliseum, but he pitched his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper an enticing invitation to be a partner in his vision for India’s development.

The bond between the men was evident and Mr. Harper reminded the gathering of Canada’s historical friendship with the Prime Minister.

He said: “I am so proud to say that [Modi] has long been a friend to Canada and we to him as during as during his many years as Chief Minister of Gujarat we had extended the hand of friendship long before others.”

The point was not missed on Mr. Modi, who noted that since the time he launched the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit in 2003, the year following the anti-Muslim riots in that state, Canada had consistently been a partner-state of Gujarat’s, even until today.

On this occasion Mr. Modi came bearing a gift for Canadians and they cheered loudest when Mr. Harper announced what it was — the inclusion of Canada in the list of nations receiving a visa-on-arrival from India.

Yet if the bonhomie was the icing on the cake, the main subject on Mr. Modi’s mind was India’s development, whether through the construction of more toilets for girls, or through the expansion of opportunities for the youth of India to innovate and create the next IBM or mp3.

As he wrote earlier in the day in an op-ed published by the Globe and Mail, Mr. Modi admitted that the bilateral relationship had somewhat “drifted,” and yet, he said, the two countries were cooperating in deep space even as their relationship on the ground remained unfulfilled.

Mr. Modi also sought to defend the progress made on the Jan Dhan Yojana under his government, answering critics who questioned the logic of opening millions of bank accounts with a zero bank balance saying the poor did in fact save their incomes, and had done so to the tune of Rs. 14,000 crores.

At the heart of his speech was his repeated assertion, “jan man badla hai,” or “The minds of the people have changed,” over his ten months in office, and that India was finally on the move.

While the Prime Minister did not appear to allude to the protection of religious minority rights, as he has done on past occasions, a group of 150 or more protestors held a rally a short distance away from the venue, some from the Sikhs for Justice rights group protesting Mr. Modi’s alleged involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

oronto: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited the Kanishka Air India Memorial site here and paid homage to the victims of the 1985 bombing.

PM Modi was accompanied to the memorial site by his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.

The duo also met the kin of Kanishka Air India bombing victims at the site.

We remember all those who lost their lives on board AI 182 in 1985.

Leaving for Vancouver, which is the final leg of my Canada visit. Will offer prayers at Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan & Laxmi Narain Temple there.

PM visits Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan and Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Vancouver


The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper, today visited the Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan in Vancouver.

During his remarks at the Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan, the Prime Minister described the reconstruction of the Gurudwara at Lakhpat in Gujarat during his tenure as Chief Minister. He said the Gurudwara at Lakhpat, where Guru Nanak had stayed for 15 days, had been damaged in the 2001 earthquake, and had been reconstructed successfully.

"Karambhoomi par fal ke liye shram sabko karna padta hai, Rabb sirf lakeerein deta hai, rang humko bharna padta hai," the Prime Minister quoted, saying that we should fill life with colours of humanity, and serve mankind. Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Harper also visited the Komagata Maru Museum.

In his remarks at the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, the Prime Minister thanked the Canadian Prime Minister and the people of Canada for the warm welcome and hospitality they had accorded him. He said the Supreme Court of India had described Hinduism as a way of life. He exhorted the gathering to live life scientifically, in balance with nature, and with compassion. He said the United Nations had recently adopted June 21st as the International Day of Yoga with 177 countries co-sponsoring India's resolution. He said Yoga had great potential to help the world overcome the stress of modern life, and urged people to spread this message.
