Lowari Tunnel to provide all weather connectivity to Chitral with rest of the country.

Islamabad: July 19, 2017...Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate Lowari Tunnel Project today (July 20, 2017). The tunnel is located on Nowshera-Mardan-Malakand-Chakdara-Chitral National Highway (N-45). Inauguration of the 8.5km long tunnel will provide all weather connecting to Chitral with rest of the country. Scope of the project includes construction of two tunnels (8.5 km and 1.9 Km), access roads and 12 bridges (35 km).

Construction of Lowari Tunnel has been a long standing demand of the people there. The project will enhance economic growth through accelerated trade activity, generate employment opportunities for the locals, promote tourism and reduce travel time for passengers of Commercial traffic. The PC-I cost of the Lowari Tunnel project is about Rs. 27 billion.

Such sad reality. We gave 60 years to catch up.

Construction was started in Mushy era, can you imagine? Many Mushy era projects till 2013 were not completed but Nawaz decided to complete all of them by increasing funds... some of them which I know

ISB airport
Lowari Tunnel
Balochistan highways
Kacchi canal

PPP abandoned all of Musharraf era projects to rot. This stupid PPPis always think about how to loot and plunder our resources without doing any work.

The difference between nawaz league n ppp is that the former does work while looting and the latter just loots whlist doing nothing..... we had to make do with these parties in the past because they were the only 2 options available to us but now with the emergance of pti on a national scale has changed the scenario, with pti's relentless campaign against corruption and exemplary conviction to the cause unprecedented in the entire history of Pakistan, it is high time we give them a chance at the top, this will be an ideal scenario for Pakistan as there would be no way pti would be able to do even minor corruption as opposition parties like n league will closely monitor them through out their tenure to find out a way to get revenge for panama...the cycle of accountability has started and now Pakistan will always witness true opposition in future govts and all the credit goes to pti, they are the architects and pioneers of this all.... n league must remain relevant without nawaz...one man's ego must not destroy a party, there are good people like nisar and zafar il haq who can run the party... n league must remain relevant as thier disintegration brings a new danger of ppp gaining some ground in punjab again, that is why the true supporters of n league should be screaming right now for nawaz to f uck off in order to save their party.

Correction... what the poster really means, "We should thank Allah he has given Pakistan another chance to serve PML-N" ... Ameen!

It completed with cost 21 Billion Rs.

Construction on 8.75 km and 2 km long tunnels was originally begun in September 1975 as railway tunnels, but work was stopped in 1976 due to non allocation of funds. Construction resumed in September, 2005. Later plan was converted from railway tunnels to road tunnels. Lowari Tunnel will provide round the clock traveling facility to the people of #Chitral even during the harsh winter season.

5 % work remaining.

Lowari Tunnel – the lifeline of Chitralis

CHITRAL: Lowari Tunnel, once completed, would certainly be a true blessing for people of Chitral and those visiting the district as it would not only rid them of the hard and dangerous pass but also ensure uninterrupted communication with the valley throughout the year.

The nine-kilometre long much-awaited tunnel is about to be completed as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to formally inaugurate it in July next. Final touches are being given to the project. Workers can be seen busy round the clock inside the tunnel and its outer parts on both the sides of the mountain.

Most of the work on the tunnel has already been completed and one having some approach to the security officials or the contractors can use it for crossing it instead of going through the rough and tough mountain and one of the most dangerous routes of the world.

It took at least four hours for this correspondent to cross the Lowari Pass via the back-breaking road towards Chitral. On the way back, the same mountain was crossed in just nine minutes through the tunnel with much comfort despite the fact that construction work was still in progress inside the tunnel at different points.

Chitral-Dir road blocked due to heavy snowfal.

Lowari Pass is one of the most dangerous land routes in the world. Fatal accidents are frequently reported there. The road is also deteriorated. It is very dangerous to negotiate with the acute curves on the sky-high mountains. But this is the only route leading to Chitral, which too remains blocked for at least three months in winter due to heavy snowfall, cutting off the district from the rest of the country.

Lowari Pass

The Lowari Tunnel was the best alternative to the Lowari Pass. The idea of having a tunnel in the mountain was first floated by a former member of the National Assembly from Chitral Jaafar Ali Shah in 1970. Construction started in 1975 during the rule of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, but in 1977 the work was stopped during General Ziaul Haq’s martial law regime due to fund shortage.

The construction work on the tunnel resumed in 2005 on the directives of President General Pervez Musharraf. Initially Rs6 billions were earmarked for the project. However, the project was extended in 2009 for a rail to road tunnel and the cost increased several times.

The construction was slow due to release of small amount of funds on annual basis and it could not be completed despite the lapse of countless deadlines. According to Shahzada Iftikharuddin, Member National Assembly from Chitral, only Rs2 billion had been spent on the project from 2005 to 2013, which was the main reason of the slow pace of work on it.

He said the work was really expedited during the current government for which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his government should be given credit as after their government in 2013, Rs21 billions have been released to it. “And you see the project has now been almost completed,” he told The News.

He also counted a number of other projects, mainly roads and bridges in the district, started by the federal government due to his efforts. Lowari Tunnel is a Rs26 billion project on which Rs23b have been spent so far.

The road inside the tunnel has almost been completed. The ceiling has also been constructed and pavements made. The remaining work would be completed within a month and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would inaugurate the project in July, Iftikharuddin said.

Basically 90% of project was completed after 2013/Nawaz.

0 case of corruption has been found against Nawaz. JIT etc couldn't come up with single public project where corruption was found. Now how does PPP do corruption? They release small amount of funds for projects every year, work is never done or little and project keep getting delayed. Funds released goes to pockets of PPP and cost keep increasing. Same thing happened with Lowari tunnel, Kacchi, ISB airport etc They start project but never finish.

But there is every chance Nawaz has evaded taxes by showing less income.

O bhai JIT was not investigating thier corruption in different projects, their perimeter was only limited to flats and its money trail, if probes happen in the future in other projects, im sire we will all be startled...
