Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday approved in principle the establishment of the Pakistan Cotton Authority, a statement released by the Prime Minister Office (PMO) said.

He made the decision while chairing a meeting focused on exploring ways to increase the production of cotton in the country.

"The authority will research to increase the supply, monitoring, and production of quality seeds," the PMO statement said.

The premier said that the use of modern technology was essential to increase yield per acre.

The meeting also approved setting up an inter-ministerial committee to expedite the production of quality cotton seeds.

During the meeting, the prime minister said that the government was providing subsidies to farmers on modern agricultural implements, quality seeds, and fertilizers.

"The real benefit of subsidy should be given to the farmer through a farmer card," the premier was quoted as saying.

"New laws should be enacted to protect the rights of farmers and consultation with all stakeholders should be ensured," he said.

The meeting also approved the enactment of new laws to protect the rights of cotton growers in Pakistan.

"The meeting was informed that there is a stock of 4.17 million tonnes of wheat at present. The federal and provincial governments are jointly providing Rs 15.5 billion subsidies on fertilizer," the PMO handout said.

The statement added that as per the directions of the prime minister, a Farmers' Forum has been set up under the chairmanship of the Federal Minister for Food Security.

"The purpose of this forum is to ensure the representation of farmers in policy matters and to resolve their issues expeditiously," it said.

The Prime Minister also approved the convening of a National Cotton Conference. He also directed authorities to carry out feasibility for setting up plants for local production of DAP fertilizer in the country.

With agriculture a provincial matter, the authority would struggle to get the goals achieved till it gets legal protection or coordination from all the provinces. Moreover, Balochistan's newly irrigated land around Kachi canal and the land from Khurram tangi and Mohamand Dam should be declared a cotton, soybean, and pulses area with the cultivation of water-thirsty plants like sugar cane banned there.

What about all those Cotton research institutes that are already drawing billions in funding and salaries?

Finally, somebody with some actual insight. Thank you.

And related ones, like at the Uni of Agri in Fsd and dozen other research 'units.'

They will, of course, remain. There should be no surprises why we are (and seemed determined to remain) a third world nation.

Sounds like the same thing I heard about the schools, some of them remain closed completely, gathering dust but somehow workers still receive full salary doing nothing...

Absolutely.

Don't forget that the government removed Tariq Banuri, an honest man with a vision (and a PhD from Harvard) from the Higher Education Commission just to appoint a corrupt dumbass whose 'buzzwords' and unrealistic ideas had convinced the PM that he should get a shot (again --- he was many years earlier responsible for destroying higher education by focusing so overwhelmingly on quantity over quality that the results were devastating).

The IHC finally restored Dr. Banuri --- but there are only a few months left in his tenure. Ridiculous circus.

Can his tenure not be renewed or something? How does it work?

Don't think we should waste too many resources on cotton production if we can get them cheaper from Uzbekistan.

We should allocate our scarce arable lands on growing food which has direction correlation with inflation and people's daily lives.

??? Cotton price have doubled in last few years. Pakistan is 4th largest cotton producing country in the world.

Don’t you remember white farmers, black slaves, cotton fields and southern states. American civil war, north vs south cotton growing farmers.

Cotton is very valuable to pakistan since we have a huge textile industry.

It should be --- the HEC was headless for months due to the govt illegal removing him.

Not sure how it would work.
