PM fears another 9/11 due to presence of foreign militants

ISLAMABAD (updated on: July 14, 2008, 19:25 PST): Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday said that concerns about attacks similar to 9/11 will exist if foreign extremists continue interference in the tribal regions.

Gilani endorsed the US concerns about tribal regions and said "it is a matter of concern that extremists from Chechnya, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan arrive in the tribal areas".

"These people are disturbing our peace," the Prime Minister told reporters after awarding certificates to the motorway police.

"The United States is agreed with the government policy about tribal regions and I do not want another 9/11 happens in future," Gilani said.

He said the United States supports his government's policy on combating terrorism and extremism in the country. However, Gilani said the US has its own concerns over the involvement of foreign elements in terrorist activities on Pakistani soil so that there are no major mishaps in future.

"Terrorists should be separated from the people who want peace in their areas".

To a question he said the United States fully convince of respecting Pakistan's sovereignty however, he said they object whenever militants intensify their activities in the tribal areas. He said Pakistan would never allow anyone to carry operation against the terrorists in its soil.

US suffers heavy Afghan losses

Nine US soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, in one of the biggest losses of life in a single incident since operations there began in 2001.

The troops died when insurgents attacked a military outpost in the north-eastern province of Kunar, close to the border with Pakistan.

The fighting came as international and Afghan forces battled militants on several fronts.

One soldier from the US-led coalition was killed by a bomb in Helmand.

On Sunday, US forces said 40 insurgents had been killed in Helmand province in 24 hours.

Insurgents 'hiding'

A statement from Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said the nine were killed in several hours of fighting in a mountainous area in Kunar province.

It said 15 more Isaf soldiers were wounded along with four Afghan troops.

Isaf currently has 53,000 troops from 40 countries.

Insurgents used rockets, mortars and machine guns to attack the remote Afghan army and Nato outpost.

Isaf and Afghan National Army forces responded with small arms, machine guns, mortars and artillery, the statement said.

Fighter jets and Apache helicopters were also deployed. Reports quoting Afghan officials say there may also have been civilian casualties.

Nato says the rebels suffered heavy casualties. It did not name the attackers but there has been a sharp increase in Taleban attacks in the country, and in that region in particular.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says Afghanistan's north-eastern border with Pakistan is a well-known trouble spot.

The fighting is close to where US forces were accused of killing 47 civilians in an air strike in Nangarhar province a week ago.

The US military said they were militants.

In a separate incident on Sunday, a suicide bomber killed at least 21 people, many of them children, in a market in the Deh Rawud district of Uruzgan province.

No group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing.

Maybe he is scared that some more losses like this for the ISAF will see retaliatory strike from them near the or on the borders of Pakistan which will escalate the tension.

I think PM is trying to please US by making such comments, but what he has ignored is a fact that statment like these can not lower US pressure on Pakistan to "DO MORE" in so called War on Terror.

Secondly i think he made this statement to prepare Pakistan masses for probable US military intervention in FATA. As reports indicate that Pakistan's diplomatic mission to US insisted that Pakistan had done enough and was adopting all possible measures to prevent border crossing of militants. On the other hand US had very tough stand that a lot more was needed to be done and if Pakistan could not do more, then US troops would do more; that Pakistan strongly refused. But refused where; infront of the media. Who knows Pakistan Govt might had agreed to allow US troops in FATA. Lets see what happens in future.

This is odd. Most people in Pakistan believe it was a false flag op to begin with, in fact Mushy himself has said that there had to have been the involvement of an advanced organization that knew the US defences inside out. I guess this counts as a big favor towards the US by Gilani, to support the fairy story? :undecided:

Single 9/11 has caused enough tremors and judders in the world, God know what another 9/11 will bring for us…:undecided:

There is also no denial that North West Pakistan is infested with these terrorist elements and whether another 9/11 happens or not, US forces are not going anywhere…they have done enough incursions in Pakistan in the past and I am afraid that they wont hesitate it in future whenever they need to……

what the Hell?? what is purpose of that idiotic statement at that time?? :hitwall:

Answer: Inviting US to increase their raids on tribal belt and weaken Pak military.

American raids will result in deaths and destruction which will shift the attention of populace from development issues to war, infect it is an attempt to drag Pakistanis in to a situation that natives should run for their lives instead of demanding basic rights and justice.

There are no doubts what so ever that present regime is not less than a disease.
Even the senior most member of PPP and close friend of BB Amin Fahim is not happy the way inept cabinet is handling the state affairs.
