PM approves 2 additional coal fired power plants at Gadani

I know even now the total installed capacity is close to 22,000MW. But they don't run the plants due to high cost of generation. They are maintaining the balance between cost of production and sale. If they provide 24 hour electricity, expect to double the net losses of circular debt.

My point is the stable generation capacity. After 3 years we will have at least 2000 - 3000 MW of electricity from Hydro, Chashma III and possibly IV Nuclear Power plant, some coal based power plants up n running as well as the solar and wind power. So the overall capacity is going to increase and this is mostly cheap source of electricity. We got the high cost energy options already, its just the effort to introduce cheaper source to maintain balance.

PS: I think the installed capacity you are mentioning is of 2008 and not 2002. But that's not the point to discuss so no worries.
www.ppib.gov.pk/PowerPolicy2002.pdf

install capacity was 20,000 back then before chashma nuclear plant 2 and some other hydro projects were completed.
today its near 25,000+ MW, problem is efficiency and lack of gas or fuel not the install capacity!!!
so adding thermal plants like nandipur is waste of money

instead of improving the govt owned plants, govt wants the private sector to add more, in case of nadipur it wanted the punjab govt to add more even though there is no gas for the project?!!!

any way IPP mode means private investment so why is the article saying through PSDP
www.ppib.gov.pk/National%20Power%20Policy%202013.pdf

the document will make people understand that whole mess is WAPDA and DESCO inefficient thermal plants due to corruption that constitutes 10,000 mw capcity. next mess is IPPs lack of gas and expensive fuel

Why we are going for coal generated electricity??

World is closing coal generated power plants because they are big contributors of global warming and we are putting them in place. Our region is one of the worst hit area of global warming and we are making sure that it got worst.:hitwall:

Docter Danish did a program on a TV Channel in which he proved that it will be very deadly for people of Karachi if coal power generation units are installed in Gadani.
world is producing 70% of energy through coal including USA and Germany, now they are suppose to cut that to half by 2040..you are producing zero percent from coal, reason is that we are richer than them and are like Saudis:pakistan:, even though we are 7 th largest country by carbon profile we are not even in top 100 (india is by the way top 10!!)

But now world is rapidly switching from coal and it is not futures fuel for generating power, and it is not good for our environment too.

Actually lots of time left for coal. Pakistan have about 185 billion tons reserves. For exemple Chinese company will extract just 10 million tons per year with investment of $3.2 billion and 900mw power plant in Thar. Pakistan need to take advantage of most of these resources, let Indians come and invest, let them take cheap coal back to India. Coal is here to stay for at least this century.

Pakistan don't need Indian money, we just need to get things right in the country and make and implement right policies in a right way and whole world will be rushing to invest in Pakistan, we have so much opportunities for them specially in gas, oil, coal sectors.

when it comes to thar coal for export only india is possible market, as coal is too low quality to be transported somewhere else

Yep, for India it will be cheap to extract and export back to India from Pakistan.

Do you know that ADB stopped funding thar based plants because the thar coal created more pollution than imported coal. These plants will be run on imported coal and thus more environment friendly than those who would be operated using thar coal.

imported coal ???
You means custom duty ? shipment charges ? Local Taxes ?
expensive coal,
expensive electric by coal !!!
Cheaper electricity the Impossible Dream of common Pakistani

misconception. coal will still remain the major source of production till 2050 atleast.
countries are trying to decrease dependence by switching to other sources but coal will still remain the largest source.
now we are also not going full time coal. bhasha, dasu and bunj along with solar and wind will add as much as engy as coal. this will mean that pakistan will remain the lowest coal consumer/capita in world as it is today
