Hi All,

My current organisation has offered me onsite opportunity to Europe for 1 year. It is an implementation role, which means it will involve a lot of client facing activities.

Although the work onsite is good, I am really fed up with my current company, and want to leave.

I know if I try looking out for few more months, I will get a good job with better pay package in India.

If I go onsite, I will remain in the same company for one more year and when I come back I will be back to same compensation package, job level, and same work environment.

On the positive side, onsite will give me better exposure and will help me save enough money to pay off my education loan.

However, changing job will give me long term benefits in terms of increased salary and job level (and maybe job satisfaction).

I am really confused what to do in this situation. Should I go onsite or should I try to change job? Is going onsite really worth 1 year of stagnant growth? Does onsite experience look good on resume? Do employers prefer candidates with onsite experience over those with only offshore experience (although I do have some onsite experience but none long term)?

Thanks for your help in advance! I am really confused.

PS: I know this is not the right platform to ask this question but I posted this on Quora as well but got no response hence posting here, as response rate here is much better.

Apparently you are in in your early career ... At this time always give prioirty to experience and brand name ... You will get a much higher return in long term ... If experience and brand name of current organization is good then go for it ... Leaving after one year will give you even better package ...

However, if brand name of company sucks in comparison to your planned switch then switching is the way forward ...

I second the above post. Stay with this company, client-facing experience in another country/countries at this stage of your career is worth it. Plus your boss/coworkers in Europe might be different from your present environment in India.

Another point is that you still have not received another job offer, wait out one year and when you return start looking for other opportunities. Maybe you will get a job offer during your stay in Europe. Go for it.

Best of luck.

Thank you for your reply. Means a lot.

I agree with the fact that it will add to me career and may improve my future prospect but on the flip side, if I change the job now (highly likely to find one in the current scenario), I can easily get 30% hike, and in the next year, this will further grow by 10% (annual appraisal). So on an average, while I will save a good amount onsite, I will be losing out on 30% +10% of salary increase.

So, if I look for a new opportunity next year after onsite, I will get hike over my current salary, and if I do not choose onsite, I will get hike over my current salary +30% +10%.

For me higher salary is more important than increased bank balance, if that makes any sense.

With the above information, do you still suggest going onsite?

Again, can't thank you enough for your time.

Have you considered the fact that once you are in Europe, you may get opportunities to stay and work in Europe? There is always shortage of technical skilled personnel in Europe.

How much and what career progression you envisage in your new job (which you still have to find)? Can a yearlong experience in EU be of any benefit in this regard?

There are a lot of factors IMO, you will be the best judge but my (very tiny) experience suggests that you move around internationally, get more exposure and see if you can land a job in EU. If not than perhaps you could consider switching to another job.

BTW what is your field? Engineering and finance both pan out differently.

With experience if europe you might probably get a 100% jump ... remember for long term career growth experience is more important

Thanks. I do not plan to relocate outside of India. I find it difficult to adjust.
Nevertheless, I have made my mind that I will accept the onsite opportunity, get some browny points for my resume, come back to India and look for another job. Hope the requirement for my skillsets is as much there next year as it is this year.

Thanks everyone for your help.
