'We don’t want to create any panic. We have asked all Bangladeshis to remain careful'

The government has kept aircraft ready to bring back about 500 Bangladeshi students living in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said yesterday.

However, he added that the Bangladeshis in Wuhan, the epicentre of the novel coronavirus outbreak, would not be able to return home before the end of the minimum two-week quarantine period.

Talking to reporters after the inaugural session of a workshop on Universal Periodic Review at a Dhaka hotel, he said that at the moment, the government would not issue any travel alert for China in order to avoid causing panic among people.

“We don’t want to create any panic. We have asked all Bangladeshis to remain careful,” Momen added.

Chinese citizens already in Bangladesh and people who will be coming from China and South Korea would be monitored by the authorities, he said.

He said that no screening facilities had been put in place at airports in Bangladesh, but information from people coming from coronavirus-affected areas would be collected upon their arrival.

“We are fully ready. This issue has been discussed in the cabinet meeting. We have taken more than one measure,” the minister said.

“The prime minister has directed that they [Bangladeshis] be brought back home. We have kept planes ready for that,” he said, but added that the authorities had talked to the Chinese authorities, who had said all foreigners, including Bangladeshis, would be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days and would not be permitted to leave Wuhan before that.

“India applied, so did the United States of America. The reply was the same. Wuhan has been totally shut down. No one is allowed outside,” he said.

The minister also said that the Bangladeshis had been taken to the market for shopping and then were returned home by the local authorities in Wuhan.

“But, we are ready. Besides, we have opened a webpage through which we are continuously discussing the issue with about 200 students currently in Wuhan. And we are aware about what more can be done,” he said.

“We have taken adequate measures inside the country as well. If anybody comes from those countries, we will not confine them, but will take their addresses and other details,” he added.

No need to panic

The foreign minister said people had become concerned since nothing much was known about coronavirus, which has already claimed more than 100 lives and there is no known vaccination against it.

When asked how realistic it was to fly the Bangladeshis back home from China, he avoided a direct reply.

“We don’t know much about this virus. You media have hyped it up, saying this is something to be panicky about. We don’t say panic. We have not yet imposed any restrictions on departures and arrivals.

“We have only said that we will be cautious and take the names and addresses of those who will come from those areas, so that we can know the reasons in case they get ill,” Momen said.

“We have also prepared a portion of a hospital in case anyone needs to be put in quarantine,” he added.

To a question regarding a fairly good number of Chinese people living in Bangladesh, some of whom had been home recently, the minister said: “We will monitor them. We will keep them under observation. We will take their addresses at the airports so that in case of illness we can understand why this has happened.”

To another question, he replied: “There is no problem if they [the Chinese people] mix with the locals, provided they are not infected with the virus.”

He said screening facilities required to detect coronavirus was yet to be put in place at the country’s airports. “But we have put in place a mechanism at the airports to get information.”

India, Bangladesh eye evacuating citizens from China coronavirus epicenter

(Reuters) - India and Bangladesh said on Tuesday they are working on evacuating their citizens from China's Wuhan, the epicenter of a new coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 100 people.

Indian state airline Air India was on standby to evacuate an estimated 250 Indians from Wuhan in Hubei province, local media reported earlier.

"We have begun the process to prepare for evacuation of Indian nationals affected by the situation arising out of Corona-2019 virus outbreak in Hubei Province, China," Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet.

He said Indian authorities were working out the logistics of moving people out of the city of 11 million people that is under a lockdown.

In Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said talks were underway to bring back Bangladeshi citizens from China.

The death toll from the virus rose to 106 on Tuesday as authorities scrambled globally to curb its spread and U.S. health authorities advised travelers to avoid all non-essential travel to China. A growing number of countries have said they will evacuate their citizens from Wuhan.

The virus has infected thousands of people in China and spread to more than a dozen countries, including the United States.

There are no confirmed cases of the virus yet in India, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Tuesday, adding authorities were screening suspected patients in multiple cities. All hospitals had been asked to keep those suspected to have the virus in isolation wards, he added.

"We are taking all precautions against it," said Vardhan. Seven major airports in India including New Delhi and Mumbai were screening all passengers coming into India from China.

No one in Bangladesh has been found to have the virus yet either, Bangladeshi Health Minister Zahid Maleque told reporter, but the government was prepared if infections surfaced.

More than 400 Bangladeshi citizens, mostly students, are stranded in Wuhan under the lockdown. Many took to social media to urge Bangladeshi authorities to evacuate them.

Momen, the Bangladeshi foreign minister, told reporters that the government was keeping a close watch on people coming in Bangladesh from China.

"We are keeping their records so that we can track them if something goes wrong," he said.

Officially known as "2019-nCoV", the coronavirus can cause pneumonia, but it is too early to know just how dangerous it is and how easily it spreads.

No, they don't abandon their citizens just because they might be exposed to a virus and leave them to die so little cowards at home can feel secure.
Every civilized nation has lifted their people from Wuhan, except the "Islamic" "Republic" of Pakistan.

It is not recommended to relocate them.

You don't help spread a plague.

Stupid Bangladeshis

Stupid Canadians, stupid Americans and every other nation that has extracted their people from the area right?
Except little cowards in Pakistan who want to abandon their kids so their cowardly asses can remain secure behind a keyboard.

Will you be saying this if some one from your own family was among the people stuck there?

Millions of ppl die in cancer. And now so much drama over 100 death. It will go away just like SARS did. Australian lab today have major break through to figure out the virus. Its matter of time we have vaccines.

Just sit and watch the selfish hypocrisy of people who shamefully belong to my country. And these same people will liberate Kashmir and do a Ghazwa-e-Hind from their fat asses behind keyboards. :)

Yes they are stupid.
Will you be saying this if some one from your own family was among the people stuck there? Ask yourself, and if not then you are a "hypocrite asshole" and every one is who is fine leaving some one elses family members there but won't want the same for their own family members

It is always been a practice in times of plague to let the people fight it at the place of origin.

Bro, will you be saying that if you own brother, sister, son, daughter were among those stuck there?

Do you know how it feels when you are stuck in the middle of a calamity and abandoned by your own country? The trauma those kids will be going through? Then we say why we have separatists in Baluchistan and elsewhere?

Even india and bangladesh have lifted there people. But we must be too special of a nation for sure?

The same questions have been asked in history before. It is best practice of humankind.

I don't need to bring in Islamic viewpoint to settle your narrative problem. For the amount of pride filled sentences you have thrown at everyone who disagrees with you. I refuse to give you that satisfaction.

Sir G, don't be emotional, in the history of PDF @Retired Troll accounted right on very very few occasions.
To avoid the spreading of such calamity, our religion Islam also have guidelines:
Al-Bukhaari (5739) and Muslim (2219) narrated from ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “If you hear that it (the plague) is in a land, do not go there, and if it breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave, fleeing from it.”
