A powerful explosive on the route of Bharatiya Janata Party leader L. K. Advani's Jan Chetna Yatra was found near Tirumangalam in Madurai district on Friday. The explosive, packed in an eight-foot-long pipe, was found under a causeway across the Kounda river at Alampatti on the Tenkasi highway.

A resident of Alampatti, M. Selvaraj, who had gone to the riverbed early in the morning grew suspicious on finding a length of wire concealed under grass. He immediately alerted the local panchayat union ward member, who, in turn, informed the police.

A bomb disposal and detection squad, which was undertaking a routine check of the yatra route, was alerted. It reached the riverbed immediately and found a wire running to a length of about 50 metres. It was concealed by grass and a saree. A 12-volt battery was found under a nearby palmyra tree. The explosive, packed in four packets, was found under the causeway in a cleavage under a vent. The pipe was in two parts, with an empty section. The police said that an explosive substance, referred to as Power Gel 90, was used to pack the pipe. The gel is said to belong to a nitrate family used for industrial purpose.

The yatra route was originally planned along this highway. From Madurai, it should have taken the Tirumangalam-Srivilliputtur-Rajapalayam route to reach Tirunelveli district. Instead, it was diverted through Virudhunagar and Sivakasi to reach Srivilliputtur. Explosive experts are studying the gel to find out its exact nature.

The police are looking at different angles as this is the first time an explosive has been placed on the convoy route of a VIP.

The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Two arrested for plot to blow up Advani convoy

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with a plot to blow up the convoy of Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani near Madurai on October 28.

“We have arrested Abdul Rehman (26) of Nelpettai and Ismath (22) of Simmakkal in Madurai. A motorcycle and an autorickshaw used to commit the offence were seized from their premises. Further investigations are on,” Additional Director-General of Police (CB-CID) R. Sekar said.

According to sources in the police, investigators perusing specific clues zeroed in on the premises of the suspects early on Tuesday and apprehended them. Efforts were on to arrest a former Al Umma activist, alleged to be the prime suspect, and his associates.

When SIT officials made enquiries with villagers near Tirumangalam, it came to light that three persons were seen standing near a culvert at Alampatti where a pipe bomb containing about 7 kg of explosive substance was recovered. The trio came on a motorcycle and an autorickshaw around 5.30 a.m. to the scene of crime, a senior police official said.

Confirming the involvement of some former Al Umma activists in the conspiracy, the official refused to divulge more details on their identity as it would affect the investigation, which was in a “crucial” stage.

“The plot was to blow up the vehicle of Mr. Advani. The accused persons placed the pipe bomb during the wee hours under the culvert and planned to cause explosion at the appropriate time. It appears that they had knowledge about the movement of the VVIP convoy,” he said.

Knowing that police had detected and defused the pipe bomb, the trio escaped from the scene and left the vehicles near the house of a tailor in Nelpettai.

“While Abdullah, who owns a fruits shop, brought the motorcycle, Ismath drove the autorickshaw. We are following some inputs which may lead to the arrest of others involved in the conspiracy, including one who was involved in the murder of Hindu Makkal Katchi State vice-president and Hanuman Sena founder-president, R. Kalidas, in Madurai on June 21, 2005,” he said.

The source of the ‘Power Gel 90' explosive material and the new battery used to trigger the planned blast was under investigation.

It might be good for BJP if he dies. Might generate some sympathy vote.

It might be good for BJP if he dies. Might generate some sympathy vote.

No one have sympathy with him every time people have rejected him.

Also, for real BJP people he is known as "Jinnah ka pujari" or Jinnah worshiper.

. . .
Well in India, he is mostly known as somebody who was divisive and communal, responsible for communal riots during partition. Advani paid quite a bit price for praising him
Well he was a active participent in the freedom movement and when Congress started side lining him, he felt that same might be done to Muslims in India(which was later proved wrong). Atlast Congress should have not sidelined him in the first place.
He did not see the consequence what partition would bring to the future of India and Pakistan or (Hindus and Muslims). Untill we were near the grasp of freedom we fought united against Britain, when we started the breeze of freedom we started finding coridor on who is the master of free India and the end result is partition.
