Dedication: Oct. 18, 1997, marked a new chapter in the history of women in the military. In the largest gathering of military women ever, some 40,000 women veterans, Active Duty servicewomen, their friends and families, and a worldwide television audience celebrated the dedication of America's only major memorial to pay tribute to all women who serve or have served in our nation's defense. The extravaganza included 13 major events over a four-day period. Photograph by MH Photography
The Women in Military Service for America Memorial is a unique, living memorial honoring all military women -- more than two million who have served in the armed forces from the American Revolution to the present. Dedicated in 1997, about 200,000 people visit the Memorial each year.
