Lisu people 傈僳族

Lisu people 傈僳族 are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group, numbered about 730,000 living in China, form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China and mostly live in Lijiang, Baoshan, Nujiang, Diqing and Dehong prefectures in Yunnan Province. In addition, there are 450,000 Lisu live in northern Myanmar and 55,000 live in Thailand's hilly north. There are some Lisu, the descendents of former mine workers for the British, live in India's Arunachal pradesh as well.

Lisu history is passed from one generation to the next in the form of songs. Today, this song is so long that it can take a whole night to sing. The Lisu are believed to originate from eastern Tibet and migrated east and southward to Yunnan through millenniums. The Lisu are clannish people as they adopted their respective clan (58 of them) names as their surnames, however, during more recent times they adopted Chinese surnames instead. Lisu villages are usually built close to water to provide easy access for washing and drinking. Their homes are usually built on the ground and have dirt floors and bamboo walls, although an increasing number of the more affluent Lisu are now building houses from wood or even concrete.

Lisu practice a religion that is part animistic, part ancestor worship, but is mixed within complex local systems of place-based religion. Most important rituals are performed by shamans. The main Lisu Festival corresponds to the Chinese New Year and is celebrated with music, feasting and drinking, as are weddings. Linguistically, the Lisu belong to the Yi or Ngwi branch of the Sino-Tibetan family. The Lisu have a Latin script and a Chinese style pinyin script and both are recognized by the Chinese government, however, most Lisu choose local scripts (Chinese or Burmese) instead.

With the Central Government's help the Lisu attempted to adopt a Latin script, however, it's not widely popular. Here's a Bible translation

Gelao People 仡佬族

The Gelao people believe in all kind of spirits including the spirit of nature like stones, wind and rain and trees so that their worships are very extensive. They even respect the spirits of ghosts and evils even though they want nothing to do with them. So, annually, they set aside a worship day for these unwanted intruders of their lives. But in gentle ways they let these spirits know they're not welcomed - by wearing masks to scare them away.

Gelao People 仡佬族

Gelao People 仡佬族, numbered about 1/2 of a million, are one of the official recognized ethnic group of China. They are mainly located in the western part of the Guizhou Province, including such places as Liupanshui, Anshun, Dafang, and Bijie. Some live in western Guangxi, southeastern Yunnan, and southern Sichuan. Many Gelaos are classified as Yi, Miao, and Zhuang by the Chinese government. Gelao is also an official ethnic group of Vietnam. There are also many subgroups within the Gelao comm

The Gelao people are often considered to be the aboriginal inhabitants of Guizhou. The ancestors of the Gelao were the Liáo (僚), who made up the population of the ancient Yelang (夜郎) kingdom.

The Gelao language belongs to the Kadai language family. Today, only a small minority of the Gelaos still speak this language. Since the various Gelao dialects differ greatly from each other, Mandarin has been used as a lingua franca and is now the main language spoken by Gelaos. The main religion practiced is Taoism with a small but significant Buddhist minority.
