PICS:5TH IAF C-17 on route to India

True, but WW-2 also showed that if countries possess nuclear weapons, there will be no total war any more, and the industrial base won't be the highest priority for warfighting. And since all countries in the neighbourhood are nuclear...

Of course, having a mighty industrial base serves other purposes, especially in peacetime. Prosperity, for one. I really hope that USA doesnt allow its industrial economy to be undercut by east asia. Detroit has to rise again. Wall street can't manufacture prosperity and wealth, only industries manufacturing and production can.

Where do you think industries get the capital to manufacture and produce the goods? From Wall Street. When people invest especially limited partners, companies in manufacturing sector are able to expand and create jobs which in turn allows workers to earn and spend and so on. You already know that.

Well thats just life. Its not like our country has to be an agriculturally dominant economy forever before going into industries and now services.

Yes, I do. What I meant was that wall street alone cannot manufacture wealth. That sounds quite obvious, but unfortunately that was forgotten in the recent past, when USA shifted to a financial economy, and production and manufacturing was undercut. If american manufacturing could have remained competitive, and everything from iphones to laptops did not have to be manufactured in China, the economy would have been in better health. As the topic of the thread shows, USA has a huge edge in technology and manufacturing. While Boeing has remained competitive enough to churn out products faster than anybody else can, the same cannot be said of GM or chrysler.

Anyway, off topic for the thread.

I'm sorry but that's how it is in competitiveness with cheap labor. Who knows maybe other countries in Asia will take China's place as cheap labor when Chinese demand higher wages.

This has actually started to happen if you see garment industry where Bangladesh and Sri-lanka have become new manufacturing hubs. this is a natural cycle and center of any industry will keep on moving to most competitive and cost effective & competent place.
