Lahore, Dec 1, 2012: Flight Safety Foundation, a renowned International body for promotion of aviation safety, has awarded Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) certification for maintaining safety standards.

Managing Director PIA Capt. Muhammad Junaid Yunus resolved that the national flag carrier gives top priority to safety standards and training of its pilots, cabin crew and employees to manage the aircraft and the passengers safely in abnormal situations. “We are committed to excellence in service”, he added.

Flight Safety Foundation said, “We feel that it is important to keep updated on the progress with reference to PIA's initiatives for continual improvement in safety & quality”.

The standard called Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) supports Safety Management System (SMS) philosophy and recognized around the world as major international airlines are subscribing to it.

The airline was audited for BARS certification in August 2012. PIA successfully cleared this audit without any audit nonconformity. Clearing an operation safety audit with zero finding shows that our systems comply with the requirements of international safety standards.

PIA has been maintaining IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification since 2006 and now by being BARS certified we are more confidently moving forward towards the right direction, MD PIA reassured.

Yup I can vouch for the 'training imparted to pilots bit' because my cousin's husband is a pilot in the PIA & amongst his 20 or so batch-mates who were set to qualify from the ATR to the Airbus only 3 made it; the catch was - If you fail a single mission out of hours upon hours of simulations (his evaluation continued for around 2 weeks) you're out - No second chances because if that was the real situation you would have put not only your life but that of hundreds of others at risk ! I just wish someone handles the financial & marketing aspect of things as well & makes Nur Khan's brain child the pride of Pakistan once more.
