ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has set the dates for the privatization of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), while not just the assets of the national airlines will be handed over to the private sector, but thousands of workers will also be relieved from jobs, Our Sources reports.

The Government of Pakistan has decided to privatize the national airliner, PIA. The Minister for Privatization, Muhammad Zubair said on Thursday that the Government will not refrain from making tough economic decisions, in the national interest of the country.

In an interview to a foreign news agency, he said that the privatization of PIA will begin from July 22, when the economic advisers will be appointed for the auction.

Zubair told that the process will be completed by the month of June, next year. He said that 50 percent of the employees in PIA are surplus, who will be sorted out before privatizing the institution.

The Minister for Privatization said currently the PIA is having 16,600 workers, which counts up to some 600 workers for a single aircraft, while a total of 200 workers is required worldwide for a single plane.

Muhammad Zubair further elaborated that the organization will be restructured prior to its privatization and adequate planning is being made for those who will be relieved from their jobs.

End.

a possible earning hand cut of the representative govt, given to rich elite !

sad day !

As far as i know PIA has alot of problems. The South Asian market is hard business. They need alot of reforms to be competitive. I wish them all sucess. The privatisation can help them alot,.

.
PIA aunties to be replaced by the likes of Meera.

Mango lassi to be provided instead of orange juice.

I would buy the ticket.

Still it is not worth-it. My parents toke PIA ticket and flight was delayed from both side for technical faults in the plane. What meera or Mango Lassi can do, your life is at stake?

@Topic

If Pakistani Government want to keep PIA, they should kick out all the hiring's happen in last 5-6 years. That has totally ruin whole system.

Possible earning hand? PIA had been sucking billions from tax payer money to pay to cover its losses. I say sell it off even if you get just a billion PKR. At least you don't have to worry about the bail out money PIA asks for every year. Keep the majority shares like PTCL where GOP sold 26% management shares to Etisalat. And now PTCL is making big money for everyone.

Pakistan is a country of 200 million..that borders almost half of humanity (2.5 billion people of India and China)..and lies in the middle of Asian markets (India, China, Central Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan etc) and resource rich Arab World...

If managed and marketed correctly, PIA has every potential to become an aviation giant like Turkey Airways or Emirates.

(But knowing the situation on ground, it seems really hard)...

A company that has not bought latest planes can't complete in open air contracts our government has allowed international flight carriers (no landing fees are collected even apparently)

Given the enormous losses incurred by PIA annually, better that the Pakistani taxpayer lose out ONCE during privatization (assuming a corrupt process) instead of losing billions every year due to political interference in the operations of the organization.

Good move, hope the privatization will be transparent.

TurkishAirways is evrything but not a giant. Giants are Lufthansa, BA, Air France, Emirates, ANA, Delta and so on.

PIA has a corruption problem. It is hard to build up a renomee when you face already hard competition. In the end you must ask a simple question:

What can PIA offer that customers would chose it?

Seems like death of a legend , sorta like when I read about how Pakistani Banks used to rule over the world or had impact ni international market 2-3 decades ago ...

Same as our airline , or what it used to be ours untill it was sold out ... :undecided:

Some sadness that a simple airliens could not be managed and kept in Pakistan

i would never ever travel with PIA again, very bad experience, i was coming from UK to Karachi and it should have been a direct from LON to KHI (coz there HQ is in Karachi not Lahore) but it made a stop over at lahore, and it delayed the flight from 6 am till 11 :30 AM and you can imagine the exhaustion and frustration and anger coming out of my head coz of lahore's heat and we had to be off boarded (i also had no pak money to buy some food and drink at lahore airport, to top on that the flight attendent were all rude, saala aik baar kaho k bhai i need this, the idiot attendent would listen from one ear and fly it away from another, would never come back

even if the ticket is available on cheap never buy PIA ticket, waste of money, very bad service, and also all dagga desi paindu jahil people

i flew with qatar airlines and i remember the flight attendents were as the @WebMaster said not aunties but all very young and good looking and very courteous and efficient, i even made one argentinian attendent smile

What can PIA offer that customers would chose it?

buy a huge fleet, make service top class, hire the best crew available in the world, PIA was the top competitor in 1960s, emirates didn't even exist back then

you dont slay the hen, you feed food to fetch eggs. you correct things than to run away....nonetheless, since I believe in free economy and not capitalist, we may never agree on this debate..
