It came as a shock to everyone when the news of Afghanistan's poster girl Sharbat Gula's arrest broke out. She was arrested by Pakistan's security security agency for forging documents and living illegally in the country.

But in this time of crisis, the Afghan Girl has found support in the man who made her famous decades ago. Steve McCurry, the American photographer who clicked her photograph in 1984, has openly voiced his support for Sharbat Gula. Calling her the 'Face of unwanted migrants', McCurry wrote that she represents all those men and women who endure enormous pain to protect their children, in a Facebook post.

Here's the full text from McCurry's Facebook post:

Sharbat Gula has been the symbol of refugees for decades. Now she has become the face of unwanted migrants.

As a widow, she has endeavored to raise her four children alone. She represents all brave women and men who will endure any pain and hardship to protect the most precious thing they have - their children.

In the past few hours, we have made contact with a prominent human rights attorney in Pakistan, who will take her case. We urge the international community to speak out on her behalf and the millions of others who simply need a place to live without fear.

Often called the Mona Lisa of the Afghan war, Sharbat Gula's striking portrait attracted immense attention worldwide after it got published in the National Geographic,1985.

Her portrait not only reflected the refugee crisis, but also propelled many people to take up voluntary work in war-struck Afghanistan.

She should not have been arrested, she should seek asylum in some European countries.

why not india? she is like 400 KM far from secular india
I would support if Indian government welcomes her but I think she can live a far better life in Europe just like Malala does.

just her or the other 10 million afghans as well?

.
India has to provide land and shelter to the afghan refugees from now on
Who are you to decide that? BDW I am all for supporting the people being mistreated in your country but I think they will live a better life in Europe

10 million Afghans? Few thousands that are residing in Pakistan are happily moving back to Afghanistan. At least, there they won't be arrested or mistreated. This Afghan girl who is so popular around the world and who has been the face of refugee was arrested by Pakistani authority and this act puts Pakistan in a very bad light. I condemn it.

She forged documents and was living illegally in Pakistan, so there is nothing wrong in her arrest.
There is. Why was she forced to forge documents in the first place? Her pic has earned millions to her photographer and she is forced to live in poverty? This is unacceptable and even Pakistan authority should have treated her better instead of forcing her to forge documents. No one does these things out of choice.

Then its a mistake on part of her photographer that he amassed millions while she did't got a penny for the photograph.

we put up with 10 million refugees for 30+ years, and this is what we get

Exactly. Image is all that matters today and Pakistan unfortunately has failed to create a good image in this regard. Recent forced exit of Afghan refugees and now the arrest of this popular face has washed away all the claimed good deeds that Pakistan has done for its refugees.

NOT CLAIMED, get your facts straight
We did keep alot of refugees for alot of years, at the expense of our own National security

He is welcome to take her away but the fact is that she forged her documents. When entire Europe is closing the doors on refugees who are registered in their own country and throwing them back, pakistan did nothing wrong especially when we have again and again madenit clear that those that are unregistered should register themselves before the due dates. We made it absolutely clear that forged documents of any kind will not be tolerated by either afghan refugees or Pakistanis.

If she still neglected all of this then it's her fault.

As for the repatriation, they are voluntary with UNHCR paying them 400$ and pakistan promising to give Afghanistan two years supply of wheat for the refugees along with infrastructural development of 500 million dollars when we ourselves dont have much.

We ran multiple registration drives.

Ok. I agree you have done very good deeds but please don't tarnish your image by arresting helpless widows. I agree she has done forgery but she could have been simply deported.
More than Pakistan, it is her photographer to be blamed who earned at her expense and then left her to rot.
