Israel on Monday said the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was still very effective in preventing serious illness, while also reporting a decrease in preventing infections and symptomatic illness. The observation coincided with the ending of social distancing requirements and the spread of a new Delta variant.

The vaccine effectiveness of preventing infection and symptomatic disease fell to 64% since June 6, the Health Ministry said, Reuters reported. The good news is the vaccine was 93% effective in preventing serious illness from the coronavirus, including hospitalizations.

64% is from the street.

Not from the frontline healthcare workers, which is the efficacy could be lower.

Lower than expected. Worst case scenario another new variant that emerges from the vaccinated.

This is not from a scientific evaluation, which requires double blind tests. The high-than-expected percentage of those vaccinated-by-infected cases could also be caused by the possibility that vaccinated people are more careless while un-vaccinated people are more careful.

not reduced efficacy , the new cases in Israel are mostly delta variant , the pfizer have the previous efficacy only against the delta variant its less effective . and that's the case for all the vaccine around the world

Vaccine don't work against RNA virus like influenza, coronavirus, HIV due to high mutation rate. Vaccine works against DNA virus like smallpox which don't mutate.

That explains everything!

I thought once the vaccine is available, we all will be free and back to normal.

But it turns out, even the so-called most effective vaccine like Pfizer, is failing as well.

Well, at least it reduces hospitalization and death change.

Outdated, it is now 39%
Things are not as black and white. There is no guarantee that the vaccine you have taken will be effective after 6 months. You might have to get vaccinated again.

Data collection approaches are not uniform across the world either. UK is reporting much higher level of effectiveness than Israel and it would be helpful to understand reasons and differences.

UK is using different type of vaccines so their tests are not accurate unlike Israel which only use Pfizer
