Peruvian army discards the Chinese MBT-2000 for the Russian T-90 better for the areas in Peru.
The Peruvian Army reactivated the project to replace the old Russian-made T-55 main battle tank, the standard heavy armoured vehicle of the Peruvian land forces. The tank T-55 was manufactured during 60s.
In early 2011, Peruvian President Alan Garcia chose the Type-90 II MBT-2000 which featured China. One of the arguments wielded by the Garcia administration was that the MBT-2000 is cheaper, compared with the T-90S, the Leopard 2A6 an the Ukrainian Oplot T-84.
The Peruvian Army Technical Group performed a comparative study of the tanks, and concluded that "The T-90S is established as one of the best ways to equip the Peruvian Army units because it has the capacity to act in all areas of Peru."
