Finance Minister AMA Muhith is going to announce a budget of more than Tk400,000 crore for the Fiscal Year 2017-18 on June 1
Citizens want a pro-people budget that would reflect the needs including employment generation for the youth and social safety for the elderly and lower income group.

The Dhaka Tribune talked to several people from different walks of life to know what should be the budget like to facilitate their living as well as human development.

Some expressed frustrations, fearing the rising prices of essentials. They think that keeping political interests aside, the upcoming national budget should be people-oriented.

“Budget, it is a matter of educated people and the businesses. Even I have never heard it from the mouth of a minister,” said Mohammad Biplob, a rickshaw puller from Bogra who pulls Rickshaw in Mirpur area in the capital.

“If you want to know how good or bad the budget will be for us, I would say the budget should ensure that the prices of commodities are within our reach,” said Biplob, a father of three.

Education is becoming more costly and it would be more costly for lower income people, said Biplob whose son is an eighth grader.

“I can hardly earn about Tk8,000 to Tk10,000 a month, while my children educational expenses eat up the lion’s share.”

He urged the government to keep the expenses reasonable as well as provide fund for the lower income people to continue education of their kids.

Ahsan Habib Rupu, a post-graduate from Chittagong University (CU), also an unemployed young said: “The scarcity of jobs is increasing day by day as people like me are roaming for a job, completing their studies. I hope the government would allocate more for employment generation.”

He also hopes that the government should allocate more for training up people with technical skill as jobs for everyone are not possible.

“I am going to retire from my job from June 1. Now, I am getting salary around Tk80,000. After the retirement I would get only Tk40,000. I would not get the house allowance. Then where I would live. So, the government should increase my salary after retirement and it might be increased at around Tk55,000 to Tk60,000,” said Gazi Saleh Uddin, a university teacher, hoping that the government would allocate more for social safety net programme.

He called upon the government to create jobs for the retirees, who would be able to work.

“The government pension should be a part of broader social security plan that will include people beyond the government services,” added Saleh Uddin.

50bn$ for a annual revenue of around that is kind of good is it?

Budget is made to do the greater good. Not specifically individual gains.... i.e. Increase your retirement allocation. Pfffffttttt....
