Gulf force begins war games in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY — Joint Gulf force the Peninsula Shield began a 17-day exercise in Kuwait Sunday as officials said the war games were not related to unrest in the region.

“The exercise was prescheduled and agreed for years. It is unrelated to any regional or political events,” the head of Kuwaiti army public relations, Brig. Abdulaziz Al-Rayes, was cited as saying by the KUNA news agency.

It aims at “activating the concept of joint defense... and implementing the unified defense strategy of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states,” he said.

The main part of the exercise will take place in the Kuwaiti desert, but naval and air forces will also feature in the maneuvers slated to end on Feb. 26, coinciding with Kuwait’s National Day celebrations.
Rayes did not give details of troop numbers taking part, but did say the exercise would include units from Kuwait’s National Guard and the Interior Ministry.

Kuwait marks its 51st independence from Britain on Feb. 25 and the 22nd anniversary of liberation from seven months of Iraqi occupation on Feb. 26 in which units from the Peninsula Shield took part.

The Peninsula Shield force was formed by the six GCC member states — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — in 1982 as a 5,000-strong force but has since expanded to more than 30,000 troops.

Two years ago, Peninsula Shield troops were deployed in Bahrain to help the kingdom’s security forces. — AFP

Kuwait: Feb. 12 -- (BNA) -- The initial phase of the Peninsula Shield9 Drill began today in the sisterly State of Kuwait with participation of the BDF combat contingent in liaison with other brotherly GCC contingents which form part of the Joint Peninsula Shield Forces.

The exercise comes in compliance with directives from Their Majesties and Highnesses leaders of the GCC States, in implementation of the Joint Defense Resolutions for activation of mutual cooperation between GCC armies and to boost harmonization amongst them and attain the spirit of concerted action and exchange expertise and know-how as well as attain requisite level of cooperation.


The first phase of the drill showed excellent performance by the Bahraini combat group in terms of highly-coordinated, efficient professional accomplishing of their assigned mission.

ROYAL NAVY OF OMAN TAKES PART IN GCC DRILL

The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) is participating in joint drill 'Tadhamun 15' and Peninsula Shield, being implemented by the GCC Naval Forces in the territorial waters of Kuwait.

The drill lasts till February 28. Participation in the drill comes as part of RNO's training plans that aim at exchanging naval expertise, sustaining its fleet's level of readiness and implementing its national tasks.
