Peace not possible until resolution of Kashmir issue
By: Nisar Mehdi | May 14, 2012
KARACHI - Hizbul Mujahideen Kashmir supreme commander Syed Salahuddin said on Sunday that peace in the region would not be possible until the Kashmir dispute was not resolved in accordance with the UN resolutions.Addressing a press conference at the Jamaat-e-Islami’s Karachi office, Idara-e-Noor-e-Haq, the HMK head said the people of Kashmir had great expectations from the government and the people of Pakistan. He called for the inclusion of the Kashmir issue in the Pakistan-India talks. The top commander ruled out the Indian claims that the Kashimiris were not interested in the talks, saying, “We are not against the negotiations, but we want our (Kashmiri’s) role in the negotiation as a third force.Criticising the present PPP-led government, he alleged that it had violated the country’s 64-year-long policy on Kashmir by awarding the Most-Favoured Nation status to India.The commander said that until India did not resolve the longstanding issue in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations, the MFN status to India would remain a concern for them. He added it was totally unintelligible and inconceivable decision on the part of the government to give MFN status to state that had been violating the international norms of justice.” This decision would have dire consequences on the Kashmiris’ peaceful struggle to achieve their legitimate right. He asserted that the government’s decision was against the ideology and sayings of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.He claimed that India-trained terrorists were involved in the insurgency in Balochistan province, saying that India had constructed 16 dams in Kashmir to block the water share of Pakistan to destroy its agriculture.The Hizb commander vehemently criticised the world powers policy on Kashmir, and said that world powers and western countries were not serious over the Kashmir issue. He alleged that the West and world powers had adopted dual standards on Kashmir to appease the Indian government.He ruled out the impression that the Kashmir freedom movement was affected after the incident of 9/11.Salahuddin vowed that the struggle against the Indian occupation would continue until the last drop of his blood. He urged the Pakistan government to highlight the Kashmir issue and the Indian state terror in the occupied valley of Kashmir. He called for national unity, and asked for diplomatic campaign on international level to undertake the Indian aggression against Kashmiri people. Hizbul Mujahadeen deputy commander Javeed Qasoori, JI Karachi Chief Mohammad Hussain Mehanti, Naseem Siddiqui, and Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman were also present on the occasion.

Peace not possible where? In Pakistan? There are only so many interpretations to such a statement. First, that these gentlemen won't allow peace to prevail in pakistan or they will try to do something across the Indian borders which amounts to a terrorism threat. Either way, seems Pakistan has its hands full.

It is also one of the reasons I believe that any resolution of Kashmir would be difficult. What is to stop these gentlemen from rejecting any agreement & continuing on their murderous ways? What then would India gain from signing a peace agreement with Pakistan? No easy answers there.

UN Resolution

The Government of Pakistan should undertake to use its best endeavors:

To secure the withdrawal from the State of Jammu and Kashmir of tribesmen and Pakistani nationals not normally resident therein who have entered the State for the purposes of fighting, and to prevent any intrusion into the State of such elements and any furnishing of material aid to those fighting in the State;

Pass this information to Syed Salahuddin.... "UN resolution is possible when he request pakistani to move out of Kashmir (including Gilgit Baltistan), and let Indian forces take charge of law and order..

When it is established to the satisfaction of the Commission set up in accordance with the Council's Resolution 39 (1948) that the tribesmen are withdrawing and that arrangements for the cessation of the fighting have become effective, put into operation in consultation with the Commission a plan for withdrawing their own forces from Jammu and Kashmir and reducing them progressively to the minimum strength required for the support of the civil power in the maintenance of law and order;

We will decide what will be the minimum strength.

Peace does not help us, what exactly will india gain from resolving the conflict?
We will have a big armed force anyway (china?) and terror attack has minimal effect on our economy.

Yeah, kashmiris will be the benefactors of peace, but they can bring it themselves.

By now animosity and the ' Kashmir ' issue has become an industry in South Asia.

Too many things are at stake for too many people & orgnisations ( including state and non state players) for this problem to get solved.

In any case the best ' soloution' is obvious - status Quo and conversion of LC to an IB.

This as mentioned in post #2 shall hurt too many interests and ' resoloution' is relative and open to interpretation .
