Awans were the aristocracy of Salt range along with Gakhars and Janjuas when Sikhs invaded. I'm sure you have never met an Awan from Chakwal or Attock. In Attock, Awan is the highest caste after Syed. Even in Abbottabad, say to an Awan's face that he's weak and then let us know on PDF whose bones got broken in the process. In Kalabagh, Awans are feudal lords while Niazis and Khattaks are mere peasants, just as awans are peasants in D.I.Khan and Gandapur are feudals.

Don't take this troll seriously. He's a Dari speaking Afghan economic migrant, who claims to be from Lakki Marwat but I doubt his claims. Yes but at the same time the IDPs should be taken care off better....unfortunately some of those talk-show hosts who did programs on them didn't paint a very good picture of the way the IDPs are being taken care off - Its shameful for us to have our own people, who've given tremendous sacrifices for Pakistan, going through such difficult times & the Government machinery isn't working the way it should've !

I just hope that the IDPs are treated in a better way & the tv shows aren't reflecting the actual situation !

Getting back to the topic. Although I have never been to Kashmir myself, from what I can gather from the internet is that the Bakarwal Gujjars of Kashmir and the muslim Van Gujjars of UP look more similar to Pashtuns than Kashmiris themselves. Heck, some of them can even pass in KPK with no-one even noticing.

I believe they are the purer Gujjars than the ones in Punjab and Rajasthan. I read somewhere that the bakarwals are specifically more strict when it comes to marriages, and they prefer endogamy. Besides, they are from Jammu mostly and hence lack any contact with Gilgitis and Chitralis. The Van Gujjars lack contact with Kashmiris even as they are from UP.

And even in Punjab, they sometime display pseudo-pashtun or central asian features. As a rule of thumb, the tribal chiefs in Punjab are almost always pure blooded(unmixed). Here's the chief of Gujjars in Gujrat, Punjab:

Interesting points. Thanks. What I meant to say was that in the earlier times they 'acquired' certain genes due to their nomadism. Ages ago . The reason I came to this conclusion is because in the old times, nomadic or semi-nomadic tribes moved bigger distances than they do now so for a Gujjar living in Poonch to be in contact with Gilgitis,Baltis, Shina etc. won't be as big of a deal as it's now. But if they are endogamous then it won't apply , of course. This suggestion of course didn't apply to Van UP gujjars

Bakarwals and even Gujjars are mostly in Jammu division and are more similar to Jammu people (Dogris) than Kashmiris. They don't have any connection with kashmiris of valley or any dardic groups. Kashmiris don't even like Bakarwals and Gujjars. There is a huge population of them in Jammu city itself, which is dogri stronghold.

On topic- Pashtuns and Kashmiris have nothing to do with each other. ANy similarities are superficial. Pashtuns are brave warrior people known for their physical prowess while Kashmiris are the opposite. Kashmiris are historically weak, and cowardly albeit, with a more refined culture centred around education.
