Partial curfew to be imposed in parts of Karachi: Malik | Pakistan | DAWN.COM

KARACHI: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday announced that partial curfew would be imposed in certain areas of Karachi due to the recent incidents of violence and target killing.

The minister said that pillion riding will be banned in tense areas of Karachi and commuters in the curfew zones will have to show their ID cards to security officials.

At least 30 people have lost their lives in a series of target killings since Thursday.

Malik said that some target killers had been arrested and were being interrogated.

He also said that the security condition in Karachi will improve within in a few days.

He blamed the violence on a third party, which he said was trying to create rifts between PPP, MQM and ANP.

Karachi needs cleaning ... city should be handed to the Army for a few weeks with full media blackout... this is the need of the hour.

There could possibly be excesses committed by some frustrated soldiers. You know, the ones similar to what happens in warzones. No matter how noble the military of any country, there are some bad elements in them which makes it imperative for your media to be present and inform entire country.

karachi needs an operation to clean it of ANP & MQM! both are a menace to the city! and use karachi as a counter strike game setting!

.
that may be the need but the army cannot afford such a thing at this time. It is already occupied at 50 different fronts. You need the supreme court and city level courts to start implementing the law and start punishing people.

yes, bring and rangers and make a new police force. i can proudly say that our police force is the most garbage force in the world. Even if a firecracker goes off in karachi, they all disappear. Punjab or Khyberpukh police is way better. All we have are a bunch of chaalia eating sindhi's in our police

Pakistan to impose partial curfew in Karachi to check violence

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Partial curfew will be imposed in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi to curb ethnic, political and target killings, Interior Minister Reman Malik said on Sunday.

Police said that violence have claimed lives of over two dozens people in Karachi in three days.

The powerful Urdu speaking Muttahida Qaumi Movement or MQM and the ethnic Pashtoon group Awami National Party (ANP) blame each other for the target killings. Both MQM and ANP are partners in the coalition government of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party.

Karachi, the city of around 17 million people and also the commercial center of Pakistan, has seen wave of violence in recent days and police said some 25 people have been killed in the last three days.

Two local leaders of MQM and ANP were among those killed in fresh wave of target killings.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik rushed to Karachi and presided over a meeting of top officials and police officers on Sunday, which decided to impose partial curfew in the city to conduct operation in different areas.

"Semi curfew will be clamped in Karachi to protect the people of the city," Malik told reporters after the high level meeting.

Curfew will be imposed in areas to be pointed out at the advice of the intelligence reports and the paramilitary force and police will conduct operation in those areas against the miscreants, officials said, adding that police commandos will be airlifted to sensitive areas by helicopters for quick action against the criminals.

The meeting also decided to launch operation in different areas to recover and confiscate illegal weapons.

The interior minister said that third element is involved in the violence in Karachi to create rift among the coalition partners, but he did not name the third element.

Malik said that pillion riding will also be banned as police say that terrorists usually use motorbike for attacks.

Leading political parties and leaders have called for debate on Karachi violence in the National Assembly, lower house of the parliament in the country.

Its not a secret who is behind these killings..its going on since 1992.
before it was live counter strike between MQM-A and MQM-H then they started targeting Puktoons so its a game between ANP and MQM-A.

MQM-A had been pivotal in karachi bloodshed so eliminating it would solve half the problems!

Dear your bhagora Altaf single handedly reamains the largest terrorist with more blood on his hands regardless of mohajirs or pukhtoons than any AQ or TTP member. Its good to see that you are taking the lessons from your beloved leader very well. Sit securely at your safe distance and enjoy keyboard war!

The Karachi police is heavily infiltrated by MQM walas and i have heavy doubts that they have chosen to bestow their selective blessings on their choice of thugs!
