MUMBAI: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday rejected claims that surgical strikes were undertaken during the UPA regime and asserted that a "major"share of credit+ for the Army action last month goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress, while officially supporting+ the government over the strike, had said that similar operations were undertaken during its tenure also.

"I have been the Defence Minister for two years. From whatever I have known, there is no surgical strike from previous years. What they are quoting are actions taken by border action teams. These are common actions across the globe and by the Indian Army," Parrikar said rejecting Congress's claims+ .

Explaining the concept, Parriakar said such operations are carried out without official order or prior sanction of the government.

"It is done without the knowledge of anyone. Report is subsequently given," the defence minister said underlining the action is taken by the local commander for settling scores.

Parrikar made it clear that unlike earlier, this time it was a surgical strike because "decision was taken and conveyed" and the Army did the job well.

"This was an operation which clearly indicates the intent of the government and the nation," he said.

Speaking at two different events, he said all the 127 crore people of India, including "doubting Thomases", and the Army share and deserve credit for the operation as it was done by the armed forces and not by any political party.

At the same time, he said that "major share" of credit does go to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government for decision-making and planning.

"I don't mind sharing the credit, including on surgical strike, with every countryman because it is done by our armed forces and not by any political party. So all Indians, including, those doubting Thomases, can share the credit," he said at a function here, adding it will settle the nerves of many.

The minister said he understands the sentiments of the people who are satisfied after the strikes.

Parrikar said that if the government wanted to take political mileage out of this, then he would have announced it rather than the Director General of Military Operations.

Several political leaders and parties have raised questions on the surgical strike and some have sought proof.

Seems Indian political honchos have decided to do surgical strikes on each other.
So while now the BJP exposing Congress, in due course Congress will reveal how the BJP made a fool of a billion Indians by creating hysteria with false bravado....man it's getting very interesting.

Quite clear.

There was no insane Indian DM with invisible "Hanuman Army" before, so no question of any "SirGKal" strikes.

Congress and other political parties can raise as many questions as they can. Modi's fake 56 inches chest is the clear winner. Ask any fanboy...

Pakistanis :cheesy:........................ Mental Gymnastics is their favorite pass time. He also confirmed that cross border raids did happen before. Just that it wasn't technically called a surgical strike, which has been accepted by ALL the retired Army generals.

Almost 15 days since the strike happened, the butt hurt still hasn't faded away....

What an Idiot MP is becoming. There is no need to respond to every thing. This is a circle of political accusations and leave the Army out of this. There is no need to tell what military ops were done and what not was done. :hitwall:

One general did say that one operation was executed in 2011. The best part is either acceptal or denial. We shouldnt overtly declare this or that never happened or happened.

Cross border operations were done several times, not only in 2011, its actually common. Ask @hellfire

Difference is Surgical Strikes are ordered by the PMO , the one which was done at 2011 was done by the local commanders, Manmohan SIngh had no clue about it, he probably knew it day b4 yesterday when he read the news paper. You should listen to Parrikar's entire speech, ignore the media...

Its height of cheap politics , at least govt shall not behave like they are in opposition

Indians.....a billion of them running around like headless chickens claiming this and that and then burying their head where sun don't shine. 15 days have indeed passed but not a thread of evidence to show for the tall claims.
If you want to behave like morons, we will treat you as such.

It might be true. The ones involved in any strike crossing the border is an strike. You can call it surgical or an attack. But its immaterial whether ex-DM or ex-PM ordered it or no. The soldiers did it. Now with this statement MP has destroyed the hearts of those brave people who were involved in operations. And some op details need not be written down on paper.

For heaven sake he is in power. He must learn to ignore things. Studied silence must be maintained on matters of national security and not cheap politics.

Its actually not immaterial who ordered it, This is crystal clear this operation was much much bigger than the previous strikes. Every retired Gen is saying the same thing. Govt. ordering strikes inside LoC sets a huge precedence and crosses a major psychological hesitation which was present even during Vajpyee regime. It changes the Kashmir story entirely from now onwards.

I personally believe the govt. deserves credit for ordering such a move. As for Parrikar, he also said "Army did the strike, not politicians" in the same speech. Which media ignored....

.
Now this is just cheap politics. The DM of the country should not indulge in this mud slinging competition it should be left to the lower level cadets of the party.
