Panama Papers: JIT to probe Sharifs to be announced today
ISLAMABAD: A joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate offshore assets of the ruling Sharif family, in line with Supreme Court (SC)’s April 20 verdict in the Panama Papers case will be formed today.
A three-judge special bench of the apex court constituted by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar for implementation of the top court’s verdict, expressed on Friday its anger over attribution of false statements to the superior judiciary by some politicians.
The bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan directed leaders of political parties to take action against those attributing such statements to judges of the apex court.
Without mentioning the name, Justice Ejaz said one political leader stated that all judges had declared Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif a ‘liar’. “I never said that the prime minister is a liar,” he clarified.
The SC judge went on to say that the bench will go by the law to decide the case instead of the popular sentiment. “Let the heaven befall, we will go by book and law,” Justice Ejaz remarked.
Meanwhile, Justice Azmat Saeed Shaikh observed that the court knew how to rein in the social and mainstream media but the freedom of media is ‘sacred’. “My oath does not spell out that I have to be popular,” he said.
Justice Ijazul Ahsan expressed anger over government departments leaking the names of officials recommended for JIT before submitting them to the apex court. “Somebody is playing over-smart,” Justice Ahsan said while addressing the State Bank governor and Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan chairman, who were present in the courtroom.
Earlier, Attorney General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali requested the court to restrain media from discussing the case proceedings but the bench did not pass any order in this regard.

Main ne kaha tha na? Ye Advocate aur pakora judge ka sudharna bhtt mushkil hai @PakSword @Guvera ... Only Justice Ijazul Ahsan seems to be a balanced / sane person amongst these three... Advocate aur pakora judge ko ye tu nazar aagaya ke ek leader ne kaha ke sab judges keh rahay hain ke PM ne jhoot bola...lekin unko ye nazar nahi aaya ke PML N ke leaders Justice Khosa ke baaray main kia zubaan istemal karrahay hain? Ya shayad advocate aur pakor judge ko ye darr hoga ke hum jaldi se clear kar dein ke hum ne ye gustakhi nahi ki ke PM ko jhoota kaha ho.. Kahin PM hum se naraaz hi na ho jayein.. Ye Justice Ijazul Ahsan in dono ke darnyaan kahan phans gaye??
