When Ahmed Owedat returned to his home 18 days after Israeli soldiers took it over in the middle of the night, he was greeted with an overpowering stench.

He picked through the wreckage of his possessions thrown from upstairs windows to find that the departing troops had left a number of messages. One came from piles of faeces on his tiled floors and in wastepaper baskets, and a plastic water bottle filled with urine.

If that was not clear enough, the words "**** Hamas" had been carved into a concrete wall in the staircase. "Burn Gaza down" and "Good Arab = dead Arab" were engraved on a coffee table. The star of David was drawn in blue in a bedroom.

"I have scrubbed the floors three times today and three times yesterday," said Owedat, 52, as he surveyed the damage, which included four televisions, a fridge, a clock and several computers tossed out of windows, shredded curtains and slashed soft furnishings.

A handful of plastic chairs had their seats ripped open, through which the occupying soldiers defecated, he said. Gaping holes had been blown in four ground floor external walls, and there was damage from shelling to the top floor. There, in the living room, diagrams had been drawn on the walls, showing buildings and palm trees in the village, with figures which Owedat thought represented their distance from the border.

"I have no money to fix this," he said, claiming his life savings of $10,000 was missing from his apartment. But at least it could be repaired, he acknowledged, gesturing through the broken glass at a wasteland stretching towards the Israel-Gaza border 3km away. "Every house between here and there has been destroyed."

The family of 13 fled their home after seeing troops and tanks advancing at 1am on 20 July, two days into the Israeli ground invasion. Several times, during the short-lived ceasefires in the following two weeks, they attempted to return only to find Israeli troops in their home instructing them to keep away.

The Israel Defence Forces did not respond to a request for comment.

Half an hour's drive north, a similar picture was found at Beit Hanoun girls school, taken over by the IDF following the ground operation. Broken glass and rubble littered the floors and stairs. Tables and desks were covered in the abandoned detritus of an occupying army: hardened bread rolls, crisps, biscuits, empty tins of hummus, desiccated olives, cans of energy drinks, bullet casings. Flies buzzed around the rotting food.

Here too, said Fayez, the school caretaker - who didn't want to give his full name - soldiers had defecated in bins and cardboard boxes, and urinated into water bottles. Each classroom had the points of the compass marked on its walls, along with other graffiti. "You will be fucked here" and "Don't forget it's time for you to die" were chalked in English on blackboards.

Here, Hamas had struck back. Since the troops pulled out, counter-graffiti had been sprayed on the walls, referring to Hamas's militant wing, the Qassam brigades. "Qassam's army will crush you – dogs" and "Israel will be defeated".

The 1,250 pupils at Beit Hanoun girls school – partly funded in 2009 by the UK's Department for International Development after the last war but one - will, hopefully, never see either set of venomous messages. Workers began the marathon cleanup operation this week but, said Fayez, "it will take at least a month to fix". The new academic year is due to begin in a little over two weeks.

Shourk Naim, 20, who lives opposite the school from which she graduated three years ago, said her house had been in the direct line of fire emanating from its classrooms during the soldiers' occupancy. On the top floor, a bed's flimsy headboard was riddled with bullet holes, the mirror of a dressing table shattered. Out of every window, there was a view of destroyed homes.

Naim's ground floor bedroom, shared with her husband and nine-month-old son, was wrecked. "The soldiers have been in here," she said, looking around at the debris on her first visit back to the house. "This is a big shock."

The family denied there were any Hamas or other militants among their 32 members, but acknowledged that fighters lived in and operated from the neighbourhood. The war had been worth it, said Mohammed Abu Ouda, 33, in order to "maintain our dignity". Shattered houses could be rebuilt, he said. And what of the 1800-plus dead? "They are martyrs."

Back in Burij, Ahmed Owedat was less certain about the balance sheet of the four-week war. "Who won? I don't have an answer. I just know we survived, barely."

disgusting should be changed to a new word called Zionism!

.
Pathetic.

A lesson for all of us why hatred needs to be abolished. No matter whos the oppressor or whos the victim. Its humanity that dies.

.
How much more do people need to see? This Zionist culture is hostile to everyone. It is hostile to Western journalists, activists, to children, to everyone in the region.

These Israelis clearly have a horrible intent towards the people they occupy illegally. They clearly have show the intent of bombing civilian infrastructure as the main objective. They have clearly shown the intent that they seek a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and seek restrictions of the freedoms of Palestinian people.

Even UK MP's have been saying this.

Israel must end restrictions on Palestinian lands, UK MPs say — RT UK

.............

The Israeli people are becoming more and more extreme as each day goes by. The right wing extremist government ruling Israel is very clear about its intentions and goals. It doesn't recognize a Palestinian state and vows never to do so. People need to realize that these aren't normal people. They are part of the extreme bunch we see around the world. Although they happen to be a lot more clever.

The real genocide is in Iraq and Syria, not Gaza.Gaza is just a publicity stunt.Funny how a "Brazilian" spends all day bashing Israel and doesn't care about Christians genocided in the ME.

Israel is an angel compared to IS.

If the other events in the ME taught us something is that Israel must have our FULL support.

Yes,maybe i'm a hypocrite for caring more for Christians but really ?? Who is the hypocrite here ? Europeans protested for Gaza ...Did you see Muslims protesting for Christians in Iraq ? NO.They don't care ! I say we shouldn't care either...to hell with Pallywood...an army of trolls spinning tails of Israe;i atrocities while people get actually BEHEADED by subhumans...there's a real genocide not this farse spinned by paid trolls.

Everybody who doesn't agree with ISIS is being attacked by them. The vast majority of whom are Muslims. A huge fighting effort is made to fight them as well. They target anyone who disagrees with them.

That has nothing to do with the topic though, and it shows you're an Israel apologist. There's no point in me wasting my time with you.

I did so in another thread and you began editing your posts telling me you have little knowledge of the I/P conflict and stopped responding to me. You also have little knowledge of the ME.

There are plenty of threads on the situation in Iraq. Is it really not possible that you can't bring that up anywhere else except when threads condemning Israel show up?

There's no need for protest. You don't even understand basic concepts of the society. Protesting in the streets won't change the situation in Iraq. No government supports ISIS. Israel on the other hand is enabled by EU governments. Which is why protests are necessary. Like I said, ISIS targets all those who disagree with them. Whether they're Sunni Muslims, Shia, Yazidis, Kurds, etc...

The modern day situation in Iraq/Syria is very complex and has decades of history to it. You cry because you're a baby. We have gone through much, and I mean much more than you have gone through. Look at what your European Colonialists have done to our people in Algeria, LIbya, Syria, Palestine, etc...yet we don't cry like you or seek revenge. We stay resilient and keep thanking God even in the horrible situation the ME is in which is partially due to foreign affairs. The West is heavily invested in the ME, and have huge influence considering the ties they have with local governments. They don't want this chaos to end. They will only do something once it poses a threat to Israel. So blame yourselves.

And these same Iraqi Christians were the same 'Arab ragheads' you Europeans were mocking when the invasion of Iraq began 11 years ago. So save us the crocodile tears.

Two wrongs don't make a right. One atrocity does not negate another.

Your stupidity continues to amaze me.

Ironically, it was because of the US invasion that Christians in the ME have had to suffer.

The only troll I see on here is you.

pretty disrespectful of the IDF. you aren't going to get any support of the local population by tearing there houses up and shitting in them. smh.

Who do you think you're talking to ? A Brit,a French ? You're talking to a guy whose country was an Ottoman semi colony for 400 years, robbed blind in this time only to be robbed blind by the Russians afterwards...a guy whose family was deported, killed and robbed of everything, and that's personal family members not talking about the country in general.

Don't get me started on the fact that "we" never colonised anybody or attacked somebody for plunder. We had it hard to but the reality is that you only care about yourselves and i will care about what i perceive as "my people" from now on...the rest of Europe should do the same.

I cried because the faith of those people hurt me,i talked with an Assyrian Christian living in Sweden on messenger today,he told me :"They talk about Gaza everywhere, they seized public space with it....while my family in Iraq is butchered in the mountains"...So yeah,i say we must prioritise from now on,and by prioritising i mean help Christians in danger of being beheaded by savages instead of worying that an IDF soldier left a poop in a Palestinian house.

IDF was never trying to get local support. It has been targeting Palestinian people for decades.

Lol I would've drew a nazi symbol on all the houses
