PAKSAT-MM1: Pakistan's Groundbreaking Multi-Mission Satellite

Pakistan's first multi-mission satellite, PAKSAT-MM1, has successfully completed testing and is now operational, marking a significant milestone in the country's space and digital development.

Key Features of PAKSAT-MM1

  • Orbital Position: 38.2°E
  • Launch Date: May 30, 2024
  • Manufacturer: China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC)
  • Payloads: C, Ku, Ka and L Bands
  • Operational Life: 15 Years
PAKSAT-MM1 is equipped with 48 transponders across C-band, Ku-band, Ka-band, and L-band, enabling a wide range of communication services. Its C-band transponders provide TV and HDTV broadcasting coverage over South Asia, the Middle East, parts of Africa, and Europe. The Ku-band transponders offer high-power coverage over Pakistan and surrounding areas, supporting various applications such as VSAT. The Ka-band payload enables high-speed broadband connectivity across the country.

Significance for Pakistan

The successful launch and operation of PAKSAT-MM1 represent a significant achievement for Pakistan's space program and its digital transformation. The satellite will play a pivotal role in providing advanced communication services, including broadband internet, TV broadcasting, mobile backhaul, and VSAT connectivity.PAKSAT-MM1 is also equipped with an L-band satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) for the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), making it the first overseas satellite to support this system. This development showcases Pakistan's growing reliance on satellite navigation for various applications, including aviation, naval operations, and strategic defense.

Collaboration with China

The PAKSAT-MM1 project is a testament to the strong partnership between Pakistan and China in the space sector. The satellite was manufactured by China's CGWIC, and the deal involved technology transfer and joint development initiatives.

Future Prospects

The successful launch and operation of PAKSAT-MM1 pave the way for Pakistan to develop its own series of satellites for communication, navigation, and remote sensing in the coming years. The experience gained from this project will also facilitate the construction of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant's Unit 5 (C-5) in Pakistan. The PAKSAT-MM1 satellite marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's space and digital development, providing advanced communication services and strengthening the country's partnership with China in the space sector.
