Pakistan's Oppn alliance on verge of split
Sunday, 14 October , 2007, 16:10
Islamabad: The six-party Opposition Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) religious alliance in Pakistan is on the verge of a split with differences between two of its constituents widening by the day.
A meeting of the MMA supreme council has been called here October 22 at which the alliance secretary general Maulana Fazlur Rehman will be asked to quit or stop supporting President Pervez Musharraf, The Daily Times reported on Sunday.
Rehman heads the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur (JUI-F) that is at loggerheads with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), whose chief, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, leads the alliance.
At issue is the dissolution of the assembly in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) that the MMA ruled. The JI had demanded this be done before the October 6 presidential election to weaken the Electoral College and cast doubts on the legality of Musharraf winning a second term in office.
However, the dissolution happened only after the presidential poll, during which three JUI-F lawmakers voted for Musharraf.
"MMA sources said the stormy (October 22) meeting would thoroughly discuss the dissolution of the NWFP assembly after the presidential election, though the JI had demanded assembly's dissolution prior to the presidential election," the daily reported.
Conversely, Rehman and his party members would also question Ahmed's "unilateral decisions" on "important" political issues.
The other members of the alliance are not amused by the spat.
"Jamaat-i-Islami and Qazi Hussain Ahmed are trying to create a rift between the Maulvis and the military. My party is clearly aligned with Maulana Fazl and I think Qazi Sahib should change his behaviour," said Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (Senior) general secretary Qazi Gul Rehman.
The MMA is derisively referred to as the Mullah Military Alliance due to its supposedly tacit understanding with Musharraf to play the Opposition only in name. Gul Rehman's statement is proof of this.
