ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf denied on Monday playing a double game of supporting the Taliban while receiving U.S. funding to fight them when he was in power.

The former army chief, who was forced to step down last August, criticised New York Times journalist David E. Sanger over allegations of Pakistani duplicity which he made in a book titled "The Inheritance".

"Get your facts correct, I have never double-dealt," Musharraf said in comments to a number of Pakistani television channels.

Musharraf survived several assassination attempts by al Qaeda inspired militants and was often praised by U.S. President George W. Bush as a strong ally in the war on terrorism.

"There is a big conspiracy being hatched against Pakistan, to weaken the Pakistan army and the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence agency), to weaken Pakistan," said Musharraf, citing the heavy casualties Pakistan's armed forces have suffered fighting militancy.

Sanger's book focuses on the foreign policy challenges faced by U.S. President Barack Obama. Analysts say one of Obama's toughest problems will be to convince Pakistan to close down sanctuaries on its territory used by Taliban and al Qaeda militants.

Besides denying secretly supporting the Taliban, Musharraf also denied he had told the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto that her safety in Pakistan depended on her relationship with him.

This is why I support Gen. Musharraf because he speaks the truth.
Truth is that there is a conspiracy to malign Pakistan army and ISI.

Pakistan army and ISI are the first line of defense for Pakistan and Sen. Dianne Feinstein tried to misguide Pakistanis against these two institutions.

Musharraf also boldly said:

“A strict eye must be kept on institutions that are undermining others,”

Armed forces being maligned under conspiracy: Musharraf

This is the difference between Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf where Musharraf would stand up and defend this country and NS would play dirty politics.

Musahharaf has never wavered form this argument, and quite frankly the Yanks are not beyond sensationalism and carefully leaked propaganda to further their objectives and set the stage for whatever policies are in the pipeline.

The Mark Mazetti pieces for example, in the run up to the CBG meeting between the US and PA top brass. All based on 'anonymous intel officers'.

There is a method to this blame game.

On another note, why is no one accusing the Yanks of being paranoid conspiracy theorists clutching at straws to somehow paint the ISI bogeyman as being responsible for all their ills in Afghanistan.

Reverse the situation and look at it objectively, and the US litany of complaints is a virtual twin of Pakistani complaints against the US/India.

If we at a forum, can read foul play then why can't our politicians do the same?

I am sure politicians in Pakistanare also reading the situation but sad part is that not one pilitician is able to stand up and say this.
