Pakistan's First Coal Power Project Starts Functioning

Lack of energy also causes severe quality of life issues that this plant can help address.
you are right but lack of energy doesnt effect health while using coal have detrimental effects in long run.

Let's see how much coal this plant uses and what pollution it causes first. New technology coal-fired plants can be remarkable clean if run properly. The key issue here will be the price per unit produced and how to protect its production from the circular debt issue that still plagues the power sector.

i dont think the issue is cost, the issue is quality of life just ask those countries like China and the reason why they are moving from coal.
When our Industry will become as developed as china we will also move away from coal.
For Clean Energy => Needs more money, To earn money => need Industry, For Industry Kick start => need Cheap Power.

What's so great about coal power plant in 21st century? We should be getting away from this shit.. We are doing the opposite.

Yeah i know they produce less emissions than old generation plants but still poison is poison doesn't matter if it served in less quantity.
Yeah true forthwith renewables what we must go for. But it is fact that we haven't contributed anything as far as environmental hazard is concerned. It's the 1st world who has done so.

Good point.

1) What will be the environmental Impact of this power plant?

2) Coal Liquefaction - Any progress on this side?

Thar people are already dying of mulnutrition & the increased heat & pollution by this plant will multiply the effects in coming decades.

whole world is moving from coal while we are moving towards it:disagree:
those world moving after using coal project first. So if you want to follow them then follow properly.

all the world uses coal in various industries including power generation but yes let's ban Pakistanis because morons of PDF are playing climate scientists today

http://www.world-nuclear.org/inform...-the-environment/clean-coal-technologies.aspx

  • Coal cleaning by 'washing' has been standard practice in developed countries for some time. It reduces emissions of ash and sulfur dioxide when the coal is burned.
  • Electrostatic precipitators and fabric filters can remove 99% of the fly ash from the flue gases – these technologies are in widespread use.
  • Flue gas desulfurisation reduces the output of sulfur dioxide to the atmosphere by up to 97%, the task depending on the level of sulfur in the coal and the extent of the reduction. It is widely used where needed in developed countries.
  • Low-NOx burners allow coal-fired plants to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 40%. Coupled with re-burning techniques NOx can be reduced 70% and selective catalytic reduction can clean up 90% of NOx emissions.
  • Increased efficiency of plant – up to 46% thermal efficiency now (and 50% expected in future) means that newer plants create less emissions per kWh than older ones. See Table 1.
  • Advanced technologies such as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and Pressurised Fluidised Bed Combustion (PFBC) enable higher thermal efficiencies still – up to 50% in the future.
  • Ultra-clean coal (UCC) from new processing technologies which reduce ash below 0.25% and sulfur to very low levels mean that pulverised coal might be used as fuel for very large marine engines, in place of heavy fuel oil. There are at least two UCC technologies under development. Wastes from UCC are likely to be a problem.
  • Gasification, including underground coal gasification (UCG) in situ, uses steam and oxygen to turn the coal into carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
  • Sequestration refers to disposal of liquid carbon dioxide, once captured, into deep geological strata.

The only moron on this thread, is the one who thinks he knows it all.

No one is moving from coal in next 10 years Atleast. China , india and other countries still produce more then half of therr electricity from coal. That would need hundreds of billions of dollars and too much time to change. So we are good for 10-15 years atleast. Simultanelously, we can plant some 10 billion trees. As to be honest, if we dont use our coal that doesn’t matter because India burn coal right next to or border which send heat waves to Pakistan in summers. So we are already on the recieving end . So better take benefits from our missery.

Btw what are the future Plans for thar coal reserves ? Anything in progress ? Any plans ? @Zibago @ghazi52

Coal power is less than 10 percents in Pakistan, for China the number is more than half.
The new coal power station install advanced desulfurization system and produce excellent pollution emission ratio even if compare with EU/US legal standard of environment protection, e.g. China help Serbia build a large coal power station few years ago which emit much less pollution than EU standard.

Need to rapidly ramp up production from Thar coal. This is the first plant just producing 330MW, we should have been producing 10,000 MW from Thar coal. Instead the "democratic" governments of PPP and PML-N focused on expensive imported furnance oil or LPG for power generation.

The 20 years of these two parties from 1990-1999 and 2008-2018 have really set Pakistan back.
