What's new

Pakistan's blasphemy laws have left even judges in fear of their lives

VC I knew the intellect couldn't last but hey it was great whilst it lasted!!

Have you looked around lately? After shooting the feet, knees, belly, and chest, the "majority" is about to shoot itself in the head, taking Pakistan down with it.

It is just not Pakistan .... look at the economies of all the countries that are participating in the so called war against terror.
We are worse of because we were in a sorry state already

so we should simply shoot all corrupt political leaders and start all over again lol

Unfortunately our leaders are not the only corrupt people in this country

yaar come on i was joking.

Is that not what democracy is all about ... if the majority wants to shoot itself in the foot so be it ?
Original Post By varigeo

nope. Yaar dont you remember in school if the teacher gives you a question just cos maijority says 2 plus 2 is 5 dont make it 5

I was laughing at Aryans 2 plus 2 is 5. no offense to you yaar

So if the majority of people of Pakistan want this law to stay in its current form (through the democratic process) would it be acceptable ?
Under the current system, yes, unless the Courts ruled it unconstitutional in terms of infringing upon the rights of Pakistani citizens, as it currently stands.

But unless people who oppose the law (like Taseer) have complete freedom to argue against it and call for its repeal, without having to worry about being killed or ostracized, no judgement can be passed on the constitutionality and legality of the law.

Who do you hold accountable - the judiciary system or those that apply it. Is their a separation of powers in Pakistan? I dont believe their is. I also believe the law is molded and manipulated so much that one may go to sleep and by the morning another sentence or 2 have been added to the law book. I am not being hyper critical i am frustrated with the implementation
You are correct that flaws, ineptitude and corruption in the judiciary, legislature and government institutions contribute to the mess - but my point is that with the kind of environment religious extremists have created, silencing those who challenge these laws, many in our legislature and judiciary might be choosing to stay silent out of fear.

have got it the maijority are not the maijority they are just a vocal minority

I think we have to be honest and accept that the concept of democracy in this world can not be thought of in absolute term but relative. No country has yet arived nirvana or utopia. Some countries are further down the road than others. perhaps the UN should be tasked with producing a minimum common denominator arrived at by consensus by all countries that we could accept as right or wrong without ulterior motives.
I think we could replicate the US Bill Of Rights and come up with a set of 'unalienable human rights of ALL Pakistani citizens', regardless of religion or race.

Then any law would have to pass that test, of whether its implementation violated the 'fundamental rights' of any Pakistani citizen.

Of course that would also mean that Pakistan would have to strike down laws preventing non-Muslims from becoming head of state, since such laws are inherently discriminatory.

With respect Ahmad, like any country, Pakistan has a right to decide the laws that will govern its land and if thats supporting the blasphemy law so be it. We live in a democracy dont we?

My Dear, Laws are made 1400 years ago for all muuslims equally........these are jews law.....which we dont accept.
Our Prophet Muhmmad PBUH made best laws for us, then y r acting upon jew laws.........R u Jew or Muslim?
The one who dont accept Prophet PBUH laws is out of Islam.......Islam means U have to accept the rules and regulations of Islam.........simply if u join any department u have to act upon its rules n regulations U have to accept the laws of that department, same here I u say that u r Muslim U have to Accept Prophet Muhammad PBUH laws, else u r not muslim.

so we need a revolution get rid of the leadership, replace with a comittee for 20 years, ephasise on security so we are still around in 20 years and education, also rewrite the constitution and introduce our version of democracy in due course? what do you suggest? you normally speak sense whats your suggestions for patriotic pakistanis

I think the people of Pakistan must realise that appointing flawed characters in our system is the weakness brother. The people of Pakistan want to believe everything they hear but to hear everything is good, but to believe is debatable.
Sorry to keep reiterating this, but the people of Pakistan DO NOT GET TO HEAR EVERYTHING, when religious thugs murder high profile dissenters like Taseer and those who oppose certain religious interpretations and laws are threatened.

My point exactly. The atmosphere in Pakistan is one of fear when questioning and silence has become the more appropriate way forward which in turn breeds contempt with the religious extremists resulting in power out into the hands of extremism.
Thanks

why are our political leaders not discussing and or talking about these matters?
