NEW YORK: Pakistanis see their country in crisis and they give their national government lower ratings than at any time in this decade. And almost no one is satisfied with national conditions, according to a new survey released on Wednesday.

President Asif Zardari’s popularity is at all-time low at 32 per cent while Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Nawaz Sharif has reached a new high at 79 per cent approval ratings.

The role of Pakistani media is viewed favourably as almost 77 per cent of those interviewed for the survey believe that the media is having good influence on the country.

The nation-state is of great significance to Pakistanis, and despite important ethnic and regional differences, national identity is strong throughout the country.

Overall, 89 per cent say they think of themselves first as Pakistani, rather than as a member of their ethnic group, the survey said.

Conducted by the Pew Research Centre’s Global Attitudes Project, it also finds that a long-standing concern about extremism has grown even greater over the past year, and indifference and mixed opinions about both Al Qaeda and the Taliban have given way to a strong condemnation of both groups.

While views about national conditions are overwhelmingly negative, most Pakistanis are upbeat about their personal lives — 74 per cent say they are very or somewhat satisfied with their overall lives, and most are satisfied with their family lives and incomes.

Nonetheless, compared with other nations, levels of personal satisfaction in Pakistan are relatively low.

No exceptions .... We need new leadership that really has to be honest and loyal with this nation .. none of them should be from these feudals and crisis kings. As a lay man i can analyze that this all can happen through a revolution which yesterday i was reading an article from Dr. Shahid Qureshi and he pointed toward that in result of food crisis something may get happen very wrong.
A revolution can bring things better in our contry rest there is no chance ....
I in my life never will prefer Nawaz neither any politician of my contry. "All five fingers are not same" totally get flopped here in Pakistan. They loosers are all same..

You forgot to mention india... because when ever i switch on TV ......I found every politician saying that they are following indian democracy! infect it is true.. our system of govt. is identical to 4 times bigger india!!

Most suitable governance system for Pakistan:
dissolve provincial govt.
form district govt. (elected via union council elections) responsible for revenue and services
central govt. with limited ministries. i.e. Defence, Finance, Foreign, few more and thats it.

We always have institutions conflicting with each other.
Interrior minister permiting military operations!!! what is this?
Politicians deciding to release anti-state elements!
Statements from PM and President does not match!
It is not clear who is heading the state? one is hiring and one is firing!

By the way how reliable these surveys really are?

That is the most important thing. How are these polls conducted because an outcome of a poll can be easily changed by the demographics of the people contacted.

For example, Is Altaf Hussain a hero?

Ask this question with 65% participants from Karachi's Azizbad area and 35% from rest of the Pakistan then the outcome will prove that majority of Pakistanis think AH as a hero.

I ignore these polls because they are not transparent at all.
