Army of young women to enforce Islamist moral

By Philip Smucker
The Washington Times

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A 6,000-strong army of young women wielding bamboo sticks and covered from head to toe in black is vowing to enforce the Islamist moral vision of their teacher, Abdul Rashid Ghazi.

For now, they are content to kidnap prostitutes — releasing them hours later after stern lectures on Islamic morality — and attack music video stalls and other targets.

But Mr. Ghazi, who runs a madrassa, or Muslim seminary, attached to Islamabad's Red Mosque, warns that his female students will send suicide bombers into the fray if authorities lay a hand on them.

"It is [President Pervez] Musharraf and [President] Bush who have created these suicide bombers," said Mr. Ghazi, a polite and erudite Islamic scholar who is about 50 years old. "I mean, the more you try to suppress them, the more they appear."

Several female seminarians who surrounded Mr. Ghazi during a recent visit to the school's Internet cafe hissed loudly when a reporter tried to photograph them.

Mr. Ghazi and several other leading radicals are openly challenging Gen. Musharraf and his counterterrorism alliance with Mr. Bush.

The female vigilantes struck this weekend, kidnapping nine women from a massage parlor in Islamabad, the capital, and accusing them of running a brothel. The abducted women, who included three Chinese, were released hours later.

Since January, the vigilantes have kidnapped other masseuses, shut down a children's library and even seized policemen as part of a campaign to impose their strict interpretation of Islam.

Many Pakistanis, including some leading academics, think Mr. Ghazi and his Red Mosque radicals reflect a quasi-official policy of appeasing Islamists.

Afrasiab Khattak, a leading Pakistani human rights activist based in the northwestern city of Peshawar, said "Talibanization" has been the official policy in Pakistan for decades.

"Pakistan"s generals think they can force the West to quit Afghanistan by sending body bags to back to these countries," he said.

Government officials vehemently deny the accusations. What is sure, however, is that Gen. Musharraf, a staunch U.S. ally in the war on terrorism, is facing mounting street protests in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi over his eight-year military rule.

Nationwide protests triggered by Gen. Musharraf's attempt to fire the Supreme Court's chief justice have brought government campaigns to rein in militants.

In response, radical Islamic groups such as the Red Mosque seminarians, which had been lying low in recent years, have stepped up efforts to move Pakistan in the direction of a strict Islamic state.

:D This article struck me as funny... kidnapping prostitutes and giving them a lecture on Islam! :D I'd love to see the reaction on the prostitutes faces!

It's not like the prostitutes LIKE being prostitutes. It's their social and economic place in society that forces them to become whores. If these self-righteous Islamic witch hunters want to eradicate it, they should offer jobs to these women.

This unfortunately is the problem with many of those who espouse to be doing things for the sake of Islam...its all a matter of reaching for the low hanging fruit. So things that get immediate public attention like forcing people to grow beards, forced shunning of music, further ostracizing of prostitutes etc. is the name of the game.

If these same people focus on the bigger problems facing the nation like exploitation of women and children (sexually and socially), increasing literacy, social upliftment work then they will draw even more people with the correct appreciation of their work and ethics....however lack of education gets in the way of what they are trying to do...this is a similar phenomena as the one that dogged the Taliban..they really were not able to translate their control into something that people could appreciate...their draconian measures (which initially appealed to certain people) started backfiring on them...quite contrary to the example set by Muhammed SAW/PBUH unfortunately.

There are always some who do enjoy being prostitutes... Actually some of them even manage to say they really like what they do... Would you like to meet up with some of the girls who enjoy being prostitutes? ;) Just kidding!

But I must admit that the prostitutes manage to entertain the public in Pakistan well! :D Being a prostitute is a job just like being a cop or a nurse as both occupations are involved in helping people... so prostitutes help society... <kidding again>

But yeah you are right! Perhaps if they have more opportunities they won't become prostitutes or call-girls! Some of them simply don't see any other other options as they have no choice!

However there are also those girls that have been kidnapped at a early age and are being forced to do what they do by their so called "owners". These are the "prostitutes" I am concerned about! They are treated very badly, often beaten and not given much food or clothing for that matter. Clients are allowed to torture them! They are just entrapped in a place with new clients coming every single day and them being forced to do... something they do not want to do. The money goes to their masters who are usually gang leaders and mafia people whose puppets are involved in the stealing of cars and mobile phones and running these buildings crammed with girls! Often when the girls start to get uncontrollable they are shot and killed, that is if they have been drugged to be controlled and it still does not work! Some are seasoned to be controlled by pimps or thugs who constantly come and screw them beating them if they resist until they understand that they have no choice but to submit! These girls are not prostitutes but are forced to do sluts! Some of them actually end up enjoying it as they have been kidnapped at an age of 7 or 8 and have been forced to do such things for so much time!

The problem with this forced sort of prostitution is faced by Karachi! The police officers and constables are often found enjoying life at such places! However when (and if) these gangsters are busted it is the girls that actually suffer! They are persecuted for commiting the crime of "adultery" while most of them did not even want to do what they did but were forced to! ... Thats the part I hate about the hudood laws... also the cops are all bought off by these bastards during an investigation! :disagree:

The thing with these Islamists is they don't see the stuff behind the curtain! They don't see the "why" of things... they don't understand why they are prostitutes... they truly arrest our progress in the name of Islam! Islam is'nt burning of music stalls and kidnapping people! Infact music was appreciated by the prophet PBUH himself! The prophet greatly encouraged tolerance... these Islamists are going against some of the most basic principles of Islam just to get what they want! The killing of unarmed civilians is an act that is especially condemned in Islam!

LECTURING prostitutes?

Geez! Take them, give them a home, jobs, a safe haven for their children! Worked with ActionAid in Islamabad/Rawalpindi. The Prostitutes were VERY eager to save their children, they however were afraid to come with us as they might get arrested because of our stupid laws at the time. But many did and they were given simple jobs like sowing or school maids, etc.

Almost all of them are FORCED into prostitution at a very young age. Then as they grow up, they get entangled into the brothels networks and thats all that they know.

The article was published in June and the Lal Masjid Sega is over.

its just like blowing things out of proprtion.
Ghazi Brothers were using these students just to fulfil their own agenda.
I had met some of these woman students of Lal Masjid.
The poor girls when narrated what used to be happend there was realy shocking.
Even when the operation was coming close and all the supplies to LM was cut off, the so-called ghazis as per these students used to eat the food while the poor kids were only restricted to take Chips.
so you can well imagine the situation.
