Pakistani teenager rape in Tangail Bangladesh

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47947117

Nusrat Jahan Rafi was doused with kerosene and set on fire at her school in Bangladesh. Less than two weeks earlier, she had filed a sexual harassment complaint against her headmaster.

Her courage in speaking out against sexual assault, her death five days after being set alight and everything that happened in-between has gripped Bangladesh and brought attention to the vulnerability of sexual harassment victims in this conservative South Asian country.

Nusrat, who was 19, was from Feni, a small town 100 miles (160km) south of Dhaka. She was studying at a madrassa, or Islamic school. On 27 March, she said the headmaster called her into his office and repeatedly touched her in an inappropriate manner. Before things could go any further she ran out.

Many girls and young women in Bangladesh choose to keep their experiences of sexual harassment or abuse secret for fear of being shamed by society or their families. What made Nusrat Jahan different is that she didn't just speak out - she went to the police with the help of her family on the day the alleged abuse happened.

At the local police station she gave a statement. She should have been provided with a safe environment to recall her traumatic experiences. Instead she was filmed by the officer in charge on his phone as she described the ordeal.

In the video Nusrat is visibly distressed and tries to hide her face with her hands. The policeman is heard calling the complaint "no big deal" and telling her to move her hands from her face. The video was later leaked to local media.

Eve teasing, harassment and rape are different thing. Bangladesh has densely populated area. If any girl is harassed or eve teased it comes to the attention of people.

For Nusrat case the headmaster is Awami League leader and has good connection with police. This is not the case everywhere. Plus Bangladesh has harsh punishment for Eve teasing.

Unlike India when rape is part of culture and taboo for woman. Only 4-5% dare to report such incident. In reality will be less than 5%.

Being from a country like India where rape is norm you should speak less in this matter. I do not know which country has condition like India where 99% cases of sexual violence goes not reported!!

Not related and discussed so many times.

My guess Pakistani other. Probaby a Bengali or Bihari origin Pakistani citizen from Karachi.
Most probably a Bihari. She came in Bangladesh to meet her relatives. Biharis are such group who have relatives in both Bangladesh and Pakistan and continue to move between this two countries.

17 years and married ?

What's so shocking about that? In France you can get married as young as 16 with parents consent. Same is the case in almost all EU nations. In italy you can get married by age of 16 without parental consent and if by consent of catholic church by age 14.

No she is resident of new Karachi. His husband is from Bangladesh who went to Pakistan 20 years ago.

Even that does not nullify the possibility of her being a Bihari. most of the Bihari in Pakistan is concentrated in Karachi. The report says she has relatives in Bangladesh. Many Biharis in Pakistan has relative in Bangladesh and vice versa.

Rape is becoming a big crisis in Bangladesh. Unlike India or Pakistan most of the rape are reported in Bangladesh. It is sounding scary. Unfortunately rape culture of India is affecting Bangladesh.

In Pakistan, mostly both men and women are killed. Honor killings or karokari is very much alive in entire Pakistan.

Not only Biharis, many Bengalis from Bangladesh too live in Karachi. I personally have known 3 such families.
