Pakistani student gets international recognition

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani student’s thesis that the rising temperature is also increasing the earthquake frequency in northern and upper Punjab and shelf areas of Pakistan has won him international recognition. According to Higher Education Commission (HEC), Muhammad Usman has recently completed his BS in geophysics and was invited and fully sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and other sponsors and co-sponsors to present his research in an international workshop on “Terrestrial Ecosystems under Changing Climate” along with other eminent scientists and researchers from China and other countries. This event was organised at Fragrant Hill Empark Hotel of Beijing (China) in September. The topic of his presentation was “Depthwise Seismological Response of upper Punjab Resulting from Expected De-glaciations in Northern Pakistan”. His work was highly appreciated there. Muhammad Usman also won 1st prize in “Student Research Paper Contest” organised by Annual Technical Conference (ATC 2011) in Islamabad in November 2011. It was hotly contested competition having representation from leading universities of Pakistan. Usman has started working on a research project “Effects of Global Warming on the Geology and Economy of Pakistan” from the third semester of his BS geophysics (September 2009) and has produced 10 research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings. He is expected to be the first person in Pakistan who has so many publications at undergraduate level. staff report
