Pakistani president moots barter trade with Sri Lanka
2010-11-29 22:58:07

COLOMBO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Al Zardari who ended a state visit to Sri Lanka Monday mooted the idea for barter trade between the two countries, officials said.

Addressing the legislators alongside business leaders at the parliament here, Zardari said trade was an excellent area of cooperation for mutual benefit. "We have an abundance of cement while you have tea and other commodities. So we can exchange."

The Pakistani president was aiming to lessen the pressure on foreign exchange reserves of both countries, officials said.

"Pakistan is offering a win-win relation as it is the only way that is acceptable to both sides", Zardari said.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan signed several agreements of bilateral cooperation during Zardari's meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday

The two countries enjoy close economic contacts, as Pakistan is Sri Lanka's second largest trading partner within the South Asian region, and Sri Lanka is the first country to sign a Free Trade Agreement with Pakistan.
