Pakistani navy plans base near port city

Beijing - Admiral Asif Sandila, chief of staff of the Pakistani Navy, said Pakistan plans to establish a naval base around Gwadar, where China is helping build the Gwadar port, in southwest Pakistan.
"It takes a long time to build a navy base, and now the navy is only doing feasibility studies,” said Sandila, who is on his first visit to China as the Navy chief of staff.
He emphasized that Gwadar port remains an economic port and the Pakistani navy has been tasked to provide security for foreigners working at the port and the port infrastructure against terrorist attacks.
Sandila also said he believes the rise of China will have a positive spill-over effect on the entire region.
Pakistan is willing to intensify cooperation with China over a wide spectrum of areas, including defense, science and technology, telecommunications, infrastructure, education, banking, trade and commerce, and cultural exchange.

It will be good if pak develop Gwadar first as its not complete fully and diverting resources that are scare will cost heavily.

We definitely need a naval base in Gwadar. This will surly stop Western corporations coming in to snatch expensive resources.

i would think it would be better to first get the civil port operational there fully . then plan for a naval base.

Pakistan need to decongest karachi port, and in a decade time, it might be good port helping the area

i think chines will help alot in building a naval port because some time back it is a suggestion for them to build one ................

But they have rejected that suggestion remember...
Guys build it as a civilian port, base can be constructed later

AFAIK, there were some disputes between the Baluchistan govt and Navy.I think Navy eventually handed over (around 100 Acres?) of land back to government. There are certain bottlenecks in development of Gawadar. The port has been operating for some time but still is not reached economic operational feasibility. The problem for a direct upcountry infrastructure presents a hurdle. The only link currently available is through Karachi which increases expense of transport. As it is a natural deep sea port, Its quite obvious that it has equal potential to transform into a naval base as well.

The only requirement right now is development of access network. Connection through rail and road (which should have been done much earlier) with rest of the country as Gawadar is only connected to Karachi through a decent road. If this is done this city will develop with great pace and importantly will take much load of Karachi.
