UNITED NATIONS: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hit out at Pakistan, saying its Army launched a "heinous" military operation in 1971 which triggered a "genocide" during the liberation war, killing 3 million innocent people.

In her address to the UN General Assembly yesterday, Hasina said her country's parliament had recently declared 25th March as 'Genocide Day' to pay homage to the victims.

The war in 1971 broke after a sudden crackdown at midnight on March 25, 1971 in the erstwhile East Pakistan by the Pakistani troops and ended on December 16.

The same year Pakistan conceded defeat and unconditionally surrendered in Dhaka to the allied forces comprising the freedom fighters and the Indian soldiers.

Officially three million people were killed during the nine-month-long war.

"In the 1971 war of liberation, we endured an extreme form of genocide. In the 9-month-long war of liberation against Pakistan 3 million innocent people were killed and more than 200,000 women were violated," Hasina said.

"The Pakistan military launched the heinous 'operation searchlight' on 25th March which was the beginning of the 1971 genocide. The 1971 genocide included targeted elimination of individuals on the ground of religion, race and political belief. The intellectuals were killed brutally," Hasina said.

Exercising its right to response, Pakistan rejected Hasina's statement.

"Prime Minister for our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters, let me add that they have to come out of the narrative of hate and dispel the twisted notions of history. There are no takers for their contentions," Pakistan said late last night.

"The issues of 1971 agreed were and settled under the budget agreement of 1974 which was signed by India and Bangabandhu of Bangladesh. Hate berates hate. We have to move on," Pakistan said.

Hasina also said that terrorism and violent extremism had become a major threat to peace, stability and development.

"Terrorists have no religion, belief or race. Having been a target of a number of terrorist attacks myself, I personally empathise with the victims of terrorism and appreciate their need for protection. We denounce the use of religion to justify violent extremism," she said.

Hasina reiterated her call to stop supplying arms to the terrorists and to stop terror financing, besides settling all international disputes peacefully.

"I also urge the UN to address the growing threats emanating from the cyber space to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing and other transnational organised crimes," she said.

Similar question should be asked for Shiekh Hasina, If Jamat e Islami start the revolt against Shiekh Hasina government taking Pakistan help accusing hasina government of same things Hasina is accusing Pakistan of, because what Jamat e Islami is facing is what Awami league faced in 69,70 & 71. Then we will ask her what kind of crack down she will do on Jamat e Islami. I mean she has done exactly the same thing, She has accused Pakistan of

Bangladesh must investigate deaths and release prisoners held in opposition crackdown

8 January 2015, 00:00 UTC

Bangladeshi authorities must investigate the killing of protesters and release prisoners – including a prominent journalist and an opposition leader – arrested this week as part of an apparent crackdown against the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP), Amnesty International said.

The unrest in Bangladesh comes a year after a disputed election on 5 January 2014 that brought to power the current Awami League government, led by Sheikh Hasina

The opposition boycotted the election. On the anniversary of the vote this year, the BNP leader, Khaleda Zia, urged supporters to take to the streets and enforce a transport blockade.

Police have reportedly prevented Khaleda Zia from leaving BNP offices in Dhaka since 5 January.

Earlier this week, the police also arrested Abdus Salam, chairman of the Ekushey TV channel, and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP’s Acting Secretary General. Several party activists have also been arrested.

Background

Amnesty International has frequently highlighted the shrinking space for freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Newspapers and TV editors have been under severe pressure not to publish or broadcast the views of government critics.

On the anniversary of the 2014 election, the police announced a ban on all demonstrations, saying it wanted to prevent clashes between government and opposition supporters.

There are several indications that the charges against Abdus Salam and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir are politically motivated.

During 2014, more than 100 people were killed during opposition protests, in some cases after the police opened fire. None of these deaths are believed to have been properly investigated and prosecuted.

Why moderators allow these Indians to post anti Pakistan topics every now and than. I have stopped reporting since mods do not take any action.

Well, it is still here so that can be proven a lie and propaganda which is only possible as discussed. It is good enough to see hypocrisy of her. How SHW forgets easily what NaMo says that India created Mukti Bahni and rest is history. However, after all, she has to prove her diplomatic loyalty to India hence, all the fuss.

Did she mention the Rohingya genocide? Or is she still feeding the people of Bangladesh the old cocktail?

.
TOI or any other Indian source should be subjected for deletion here since they cherry pick anti-Pakistan theme always. There are other international posters as well, why let them see anti-Pakistan rhetoric all the time. This is what India wants - a hybrid war involving anti-Pakistan media campaign around the world.

Oh good Lord.

Cry me a river and maybe then you can stop whinning about India stealing your water as well.

Their obsession is never ending. You have 90% border with India and 10% with mayanmar and the sea border yet Pakistan is the source of all your problems.

The pm said it right. Hatred forms hatred. They are filled with hatred and wallow in their hateful existence.

Jeez its not even obsession anymore. They are way past obsession.

Anyway as @Nilgiri says, Bangladesh is under India's control. We improve relations with India and we would automatically get Bangladesh. Its buy one get one free.

she went to UN just to give them a distorted history lesson. why pakistanis spared her in "genocide"

If we did genocide how did this gremlin escaped? She is basically responsible for the misery of Rohingya people. This gremlin is not letting anyone to help them and also Bd is helping Myanmar. She also has an extra-marital affair with Modi while he is openly supporting Myanmar for killing the Rohingya people.

Hey sir,
My suggestion is that most of the indian members should be stopped from opening threads related to Rohingya and also they should not be allowed to comment since they are openly supporting the massacre of the most oppressed people in the world and their hate for Islam and Muslim blinds. So I request all the mods to take appropriate measures. At all non-elite indian members be blocked from commenting in that section.
