Pakistani military seeks better relations with India, says report

WASHINGTON: The Pakistani military leadership is reaching out to India because it believes that the way to peace and prosperity is through military cooperation with India, says a new think-tank report.

“Attempts to open a dialogue come against a background of almost weekly exchanges of fire along the Line of Control in Kashmir,” notes the UK-based Royal Unites Services Institute (RUSI), in a report on renewed efforts to reduce tensions between the two neighbours. “Will New Delhi reciprocate?” asks the report, which was released in London this week.

The report notes that “in a historic first last month,” Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa invited Sanjay Vishwasrao, the Indian military attaché, and his team to the Pakistan Day military parade in Islamabad. The move indicates that “ties between the two foes are warming up,” it adds, noting that Gen Bajwa followed this two weeks later by saying that the Pakistan military wanted peace and dialogue with India.

The two countries will also take part in joint military drills in Russia in September, with Chinese participation. Such developments mark a change in attitudes that started when Gen Bajwa became the army chief in November 2016, the report adds.

During a visit to Britain last year, Gen Bajwa addressed a gathering at RUSI and announced that the Pakistan army was “now no more insecure and feels confident of its future” and that he “welcomes Indian participation in Pakistan’s flagship infrastructure project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)”.

The report points out that both India and Pakistan have tried to forge relationships before as well. In the 1980s, Gen Ziaul Haq, and then Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, became close. Then, retired Gen Pervez Musharraf and Atal Bihari Vajpayee also came close at a 2002 summit in Agra to resolving the Kashmir conflict despite a year-long tense situation on the border. “Approaches by Pakistani generals have been welcomed by some in India, because they are seen to be able to deliver on peace,” RUSI reports.

The report notes that recent military operations in Fata have brought security and stability on the western border, encouraging the Pakistan Army to approach India with the understanding that it will help Pakistan’s upward economic trajectory and allow regional trade flourish. “Gen Hayat’s plan could come to fruition this year,” the report adds.

The report also notes that so far, India has rejected Pakistan’s offer of a transit trade dialogue on Afghan-Indian commerce. “But with a sustained approach by Pakistani officers to India, it could only be a matter of time before Delhi agrees to at least talk to Islamabad,” the report concludes.

Lol, the other way of looking at this is that Pakistan Army invited the Indians to remind them "look, you don't know who and what you are messing with":

And here ladies and gentlemen you have shown them your weakness. Its not the job of military to seek better or peaceful relations, its the job of the politicians. Military job is to fight. When you tell on the contrary you have displayed your weakness.
Just for example you will never hear Indian army or its general saying something similar. SC is right no where in the world will you find such example where military is running businesses and making profits rather than doing their actual jobs. @Areesh @war&peace

Now they know China not going to save them let alone talking about others.
Pathetic!!

Indians need to mature up and see the benefits of creating the greatest trade hub in world's history: linking almost 3 billion people, linking multitude of countries , creating new markets, increased trade links, reducing barriers between people and cultures, creating the greatest exchange of people, goods, technology and knowledge that mankind has ever seen. The Bhanias in India are not stupid but are business minded and will certainly join the project. Not question of if but when.

Do you look at this display of weakness of your JARNAIL's as warning ???? LOL :sarcastic::omghaha::omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:

Look kid, we deal with the real stake holders, i.e. the people of a nation through their elected representatives. It's not the job of Army to deal with foreign affairs and we don't care a damn about what the say. They are just nobody as far as national relations are concerned. :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Well, we very well know how to prosper and benefit trading with the entire world minus Pakistan.

This is indeed very positive. It has to end some day. Other coutries are taking advantage of us both, while we are busy intimidating each other. Lets make Kashmir a separate nation, lets make our region another union, with same currency and economy. Poland owes Germany a large piece land, but still there is no fight between Germany and Poland. In fact Germany allows polish guys to come and work here in Germany. Thats the positivity we ought to work on.

Ladies and gentlemen this is going to be another thread where Indians will enjoy a self fellatio !

People are too childish and shockingly childish.

We have one poster calling for all out war. these keyboard generals have no life in the outside world and act like war generals over here and the other is saying that India can still grow greatly by having horrible relations with its neighbour.

Sigh. I am not surprised. Both the civilian govt and the military actually doesn't want negative relations with India right now.

When bajwa was coming to power, it was clear that he would make overtures to end the LOC and create focus on combatting terrorism and securing the western border. His statements and his philosophy spoke volumes of the direction the military will take and we saw this repeatedly as bajwa pointed out that peace in south Asia was a necessity for both sides. We also saw and are seeing great expansion of securing the western border and mainstreaming FATA and last couple of years the entire focus has been entirely on economic revival.

This is neither cowardice nor something India will ignore for an "all out war" or "we don't need them".

You obviously don't know who runs Pakistan and who guard Pakistan, the two go hand in hand.
