Pakistani armed forces are gathering support of war-weary public as they continue to hit hideouts of terrorists of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in North Waziristan district of Pakistan’s restive tribal belt bordering Afghanistan known as Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Under public pressure, Imran Khan so far dubbed as Taliban Khan for his support of talking to terrorists, has switched sides and expressed his support for military action. According to news reports, The Army launched new air strikes targeting militant hideouts in the tribal region of North Waziristan on Tuesday, killing at least 27 people. The target of fresh strikes was a stretch between South Waziristan and North Waziristan captured by the Taliban earlier where they had established training centers to train suicide bombers, Of the 27 killed today, fifteen were killed in the South Waziristan side of the border, while 12 were killed in North Waziristan.

The government of Nawaz Sharif, under pressure from right-wing religious parties including PTI of Imran Khan was hesitating to launch an offensive and had extended an olive branch. He even nominated a committee to negotiate with the terrorists. However, during negotiations, the terrorists continued to hit the security forces and civilian targets. The latest incident which triggered air strikes was brutal slaughtering of 23 captive soldiers of paramilitary Frontier Corps. The slaughtering took place in Afghanistan where TTP has safe havens and was proudly claimed by one of the factions of Taliban, known as Mohmand chapter of TTP.

The latest strikes have gathered public support and there was a huge rally to acknowledge the sacrifices of security forces by Karachi-based MQM party, a rival of Imran Khan’s PTI.

The government claims that it has not formally launched a military operation and only allowed the military to strike in self-defense. A meeting of high-level government functionaries is underway in Islamabad at the time of filing of this report to decide whether or not to launch an offensive.
