LONDON: Another crushing Brexit defeat for Theresa May means the British prime minister is on the ropes again – now perhaps for the last time.

Here is a list of potential contenders to take over as Conservative party leader and therefore prime minister:

Sajid Javid
A former investment banker and the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver, the 49-year-old Javid is the face of a modern, multicultural and meritocratic Britain.

On the economically liberal wing of the Conservative Party, Javid voted for Britain to stay in the EU in 2016.

Since being appointed interior minister in April 2018, he has earned respect for his handling of a scandal over the treatment of the children of Caribbean immigrants, known as the Windrush generation.

However, he was recently criticised in liberal circles for stripping a teenage mother who ran away to join the Daesh group of her British nationality.

Boris Johnson
A former mayor of London, "Boris" or "BoJo", was a key figure in the 2016 Brexit campaign but failed in his bid to become prime minister in the aftermath as ally Michael Gove withdrew his support at the last minute.

May appointed Johnson as foreign minister but he quickly drew attention for all the wrong reasons, including a series of diplomatic gaffes.

He became increasingly uncomfortable with the government´s Brexit strategy before resigning in July.

Charismatic and popular with grassroots Conservatives, the 54-year-old has also earned plenty of enemies within the party for his behaviour.

He separated from his second wife in September and has a new girlfriend. He has recently lost weight and trimmed back his trademark mop of blond hair

Andrea Leadsom
The 55-year-old came second to May in the 2016 contest to replace David Cameron. She is the leader of the House of Commons – responsible for bringing government business before the chamber – and is a staunch Brexiteer.

She has earned plaudits from the right-wing of the party for standing up to House of Commons speaker John Bercow, seen by critics as partial on the issue of Brexit.

Leadsom has also pushed for an end to the culture of sexual harassment and bullying in parliament.

She started out in the financial sector and later became an energy minister under Cameron but was little known before the Brexit vote.

She pulled out of the leadership content after appearing to suggest that May was less well placed to become leader because she was not a mother.

Michael Gove

Brexit campaigner Gove initially supported Johnson's leadership bid in 2016 but at the last minute announced his own intention to run, causing both men to lose out to May.

"Whatever charisma is, I don't have it," he admitted in the race in which he came third.

After a year in the political wilderness, he was appointed environment minister in June 2017 and has stayed in the headlines with a series of eco-friendly policy announcements.

Equally active in his previous justice and education briefs, he is a minister who likes to see through radical new policies.

Following a series of resignations, the cerebral 51-year-old is now undeniably the leading eurosceptic in government.

Jeremy Hunt
The foreign minister supported remaining in the EU but has been highly critical of what he calls the "arrogant" approach taken by Brussels.

A former businessman who speaks fluent Japanese, the 52-year-old is a resilient politician, having headed up the National Health Service for six years during a funding crisis.

He replaced Johnson as Britain's chief diplomat. Softly spoken and measured, Hunt is calm under fire and has gradually seen his power and influence in cabinet rise.

Dominic Raab

An ardent eurosceptic with a black belt in karate, the 45-year-old has quickly climbed the ministerial ladder.

Raab only joined the government in 2015 under Cameron.

He backed Brexit and was named justice minister in the new cabinet after the 2016 referendum.

Raab later served as Brexit secretary from July to November 2018 when he stepped down in protest at the Brexit deal struck with the EU.

Just before his departure, he was widely mocked for saying that he "hadn't quite understood" how reliant UK trade in goods is on the Dover-Calais crossing.

He may be the son of a Pakistan bus driver but he is more english than english. His brother just died of alcohol related issues. SJ is about as pakistani as the queen. But i do hope he wins. As i think he will be a good PM and racists will get well pissed off

Wrong comparisons Sir!
He was born and bred in a British environment who probably never been to pakistan and never had a experience of Pakistani culture.

Assuming he has or not but are you the commissioner in charge of deciding who deserves to be Pakistani or not?

And think of UK. Nobody gives a fcuk about Pakistani passport. It has one of the lowest values in the world only next to Afghanistan. But the UK passport is prized. Did you know a person across the globe can apply for UK passport on just the basis that one of his/her grandparent was born in UK. This means if you have never set foot in UK, your father has never set foot in UK but his mother [not father] was born in UK 100 years ago you can apply for British passport based on your ancestry.

Meaning if your just your grandmother was English and was born century ago but you or your parents have never seen UK you can apply. Just for the record Sajid Javid's dad and mother were born in Pakistan and moved to UK only in 1960s.

who ever becomes next PM of UK from conservative party, won't able to fix this Brexit mess anyways.

Roots die hard, we dont need him to be a full blown Pakistani, we just want the man in downing street to be more sympathetic to Pakistan than India, that goes a long way.

Uncle toms and sell outs are normally far harsher towards Muslims/own people than non-Muslim white guys. Considering his party and his past public actions and statements, I think it's naive to think that he's going to favour Pakistan over India.

I still cannot understand what,s really causing a pain in your rear end.The whole thing behind me declaring that guy a british was that he is not going to favour pakistan or something like that because he is just a british guy who had pakistani ancestry. So yes again i am saying technically he is british not pakistani. And why such statements made you angry?
You are probably moping floors in UK or cleaning toilets over there as a second class citizen and yet you have the audacity to degrade pakistan and pakistani passport. If economic benefits is all you prefer and it,s the only motivating force behind your actions then what,s the difference between you and a whore? Why don,t you work harder and contribute something for your motherland which is your identity so one day this country will overcome it,s problems and become like developed countries? If every american, japanese or british ran away like you to live in some other country as a second class citizen then i am sure the countries i mentioned above would not have been in the "developed" category today.
Just like any other country we too have problems and those problems don,t make me suffer from inferiority complex and i am damn proud to be a pakistani who lives in his country as a first class citizen. There are plenty of people here who are living much better than those living abroad and earning more money.
Now take off that pakistani flag from your profile because you are such a disgrace for this country. And with such sentiments towards pakistan you serve no purpose on this forum. Bugg off before i loose my temper.

Yup that was my point.I hope he will introduce good policies for migrants from our side and defeat the racist culture in UK.

Not possible. PM position in UK will never go to anyone other than a white.

Indians and UKIP are going to go bezerk if that happens. They can’t tolerate Sadiq Khan. This would by a hydrogen implosion.

That said, Brexit is in troubled waters now.

I think it is better for him and Muslims to stay away from politics as it will create insecurity among white extremists christans and as a result they may carryout Nz type attack
